How to Identify Songs on Your PC or Mac

How to Identify Songs on Your PC or Mac.

When you hear a nice tune while watching a movie or on TikTok or Instagram Reels, you can use your PC or Mac to easily identify it. On your iPhone or Android phone, services like Soundhound, Alexa, and Shazam can easily identify songs playing around you. However, these tools may not necessarily work on your PC.

We are going to show you all the useful methods to identify these songs which will allow you to add them to your music library on streaming services like Apple Music or Spotify.

How to Use Cortana to Identify Songs on Your PC

On a Windows PC, the Cortana voice assistant has Shazam-powered music recognition. To use this, you will need a microphone on your PC. The microphone is used to listen and identify songs.

People with Windows laptops have nothing to worry about, but those using desktop PCs may need to plug in a USB microphone or use a headset with a built-in microphone for this feature to work.

You can click the search icon on the taskbar located next to the start menu and search for Cortana. Open the app and use the voice command: “What song is this?”. Cortana will start listening to the song and name it for you.

The sound of the song must be played on another device or through your computer’s speakers. This is worth remembering for those who use headphones with a built-in microphone. Cortana won’t be able to identify the sound that’s playing through your headphones.

When the song is found, feel free to add it to your playlist.

How to Use Siri to Identify Songs on macOS

Just like iOS devices like iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad, Siri can find songs on your Mac. The app comes pre-installed on your Apple device, so you don’t need to download anything from the Mac App Store to use this feature. You can use the “Hey Siri” voice command to activate Siri on your Mac, or you can click the Siri button in the menu bar.

2-You will see a Siri pop-up animation on the screen when it is activated. 3-You can now use the Song Name voice command. Siri listens to the music you’re playing and identifies it after a few seconds.

You can add it to your Apple Music library or purchase it from the iTunes Store if you like. The Music app is home to both of these services.

This Siri feature is powered by Apple’s Shazam platform. Alternatively, you can download the Shazam app for Mac. The application will appear in the menu bar. You can click its icon in the menu bar and double click the Shazam icon. This will activate a feature called Auto Shazam, which constantly listens to the sound around you to find songs.

You can click the Shazam icon again to disable automatic Shazam.

How to Use Shazam’s Chrome Extension to Find Songs

If you use Google Chrome as your primary browser, you can download the Shazam Chrome extension and use it as your music ID. Its biggest advantage is that it doesn’t need to use a microphone to recognize songs.

Play an audio file (or a video with music playing) in any Chrome tab and click the Shazam extension icon. The service will take a few minutes and determine the song for you. This service works very well with popular music, but may not be ideal for obscure tracks.

How to Identify Songs Using a Web Browser

On your smartphone, you can use the Google search app to identify songs even while humming the tune. To do this on PC, you can check out Midomi, which is powered by SoundHound. You can open the Midomi webpage and click the big S icon, give the site access to your microphone and it will do the rest.

The service is pretty good at identifying songs, even if you’re humming a tune. You also don’t have to hit the perfect notes while humming.

Midomi quickly finds songs and gives you links to several streaming services including Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer and Amazon Music. It also shows lyrics on the same page, which means you don’t have to rely on apps like Musixmatch to find lyrics.

Because it’s a website, Midomi works across multiple operating systems, making it the perfect tool for song identification on Linux computers as well.

Don’t Pause the Music

When you are done identifying the songs, you can check out a few apps that also allow you to download music on Android. If you are the creative type, you should also try music production tools to create your own music.
