Recently on Reddit, I get an annoying popup asking me to confirm my email address. I asked a few of my Reddit colleagues in the office and it looks like Reddit is experimenting with selective users.
I understand email helps if you lose your password. However, since I am using Chrome’s built-in password manager, there is less chance of this happening. Now you can always create a new Google account and link it to Reddit, but that’s too much work. The best way is to create a proxy email using sites like Guerrillamai. It’s free and open source. There is also a mailbox, so you can even check it.

While this trick should offer you temporary relief, the bigger issue seems to be the direction in which Reddit is heading. First, they make it difficult to use a mobile site without constantly pushing you to the mobile app. And now they need the user’s email address. Personally, I didn’t expect Reddit to grumble about emails. Back in 2012, when I discovered Reddit, it prided itself on not asking you for your email address. Why do they need my email address now? Do they follow the likes of Facebook and Google?
