The flashlight on your iPhone is a handy feature that you can use when reading in a tent, looking for dropped keys while walking your dog at night, etc.
It may not be as bright as a pocket torch, but it gives more than enough light when you need it in a pinch. Unfortunately, a software glitch or bug can cause this feature to fail, and a drain on the iPhone battery can prevent the flashlight from working.
Anyway, there are a few things you can try when your iPhone flashlight isn’t working.
What to Do When the Flashlight on Your iPhone Is Not Working
You can find your flashlight in the Control Center on your iPhone. If you’ve accidentally deleted it, you can quickly add it back in the Settings app.
Open the Settings app (gear icon) and click Control Center.
Scroll to Flashlight under Additional Controls and tap the Add (+) icon next to it. The flashlight is now part of the Control Center.
Charge Your iPhone
If your iPhone’s battery is critically low, or your phone is extremely cold or very warm, the flashlight may not work.
Before using the flashlight again, fully charge your iPhone and make sure it warms up to normal temperature.
Close the Camera app
The flashlight may stop working if the Camera app on your iPhone is turned on. If both are turned on at the same time, a conflict may arise as the camera flash and flashlight use the same bulb to operate.
Turn off the Camera app and check if the flashlight is working.
Check the Brightness Slider
The brightness slider helps you adjust the brightness of the flashlight on your iPhone. If you’ve used a flashlight before and forgot to increase the brightness level, try setting it to full power again and see if it lights up again.
Just press and hold the button of the flashlight until it lifts the brightness slider and then you can adjust the brightness.
Update iOS
Sometimes, your iPhone flashlight may stop working due to a bug or a pending update. You can update iOS and then check if the flashlight is working again.
Note. Before updating iOS, back up your iPhone to iCloud or your computer.
On iPhone, tap Settings> General.
Then click on “Software Update”.
If there are multiple updates, select the update you want to install and click Download and Install.
Use Siri to Turn On the iPhone Flashlight
If you can’t turn on the flashlight in the Settings app, you can turn it on using Siri.
Tap Settings> Siri & Search.
Turn on “Hey Siri” and “Allow Siri when Locked.”
Then say “Hey Siri, turn on your flashlight†or “Hey Siri, turn on my flashlight.†If that works, you can use Siri again to turn off the flashlight.
Restart Your iPhone
Restart your iPhone to fix bugs or software issues if the flashlight is still not working. This resets some of the temporary settings that are causing your iPhone’s functions or applications to malfunction. Use the following instructions to reset:
iPhone X, 11, 12: Press and hold the Volume or Side button. iPhone SE (2nd gen), 6, 7, 8: Press and hold the side button. iPhone: SE (1st generation) 5 years or older: Press and hold the top button.
Reset iPhone Settings
You won’t lose any data or media when you factory reset your iPhone.
Note. All settings, including location, network, privacy, dictionary and keyboard, will be reset to their defaults or deleted.
Tap Settings> General.
Click “Reset”.
Tap Reset All Settings> Confirm and check if your flashlight is working.
Restore Your iPhone to a Previous Backup
If iPhone’s flashlight still doesn’t work, try restoring iPhone from a previous backup using iCloud. This is one way to recover damaged or lost data that could cause your flashlight to malfunction. Before starting the process, connect your iPhone to a Wi-Fi network and turn on the power.
Note: This should only be used as a last resort. You should only do this if you have a backup that you can restore, otherwise you will lose all your previous data on iPhone. You can check the last available backup or create a new one as shown below.
Click Settings and then your name at the top.
Tap iCloud.
Click iCloud Backup.
Now you can see when your last backup was made. Back up by clicking Back Up Now to make sure you have all the latest data backed up before you reset your phone.
Now go back to Settings> General> Reset.
Select Erase All Content and Settings.
Select Erase Now and enter your password when prompted.
Select “Erase iPhone” and confirm the action. Enter your Apple ID and password and select Erase iPhone again.
Note. In step 8, your data will be deleted, but an iCloud backup will be created instead.
You will see the Apple logo and a progress bar on the screen. When the progress bar fills up and the iPhone restarts, sign in to iCloud. Click Recover from iCloud Backup on the Apps & Data screen.
Select a backup and follow the onscreen instructions to restore iPhone from iCloud backup.
Now you can check if your flashlight is working.
Other Things to Try When the iPhone Flashlight Is Not Working
If none of the above solutions worked, try the following troubleshooting steps:
Reset iPhone to factory settings. Make sure you back up all your data before restarting your iPhone because it will erase all of your data. If the flashlight is not working and the flashlight button is on as usual, you may have a hardware problem. Contact Apple Support or have it repaired. If your iPhone is still under warranty, you can get it repaired for free.
You may not use your iPhone’s flashlight every day, but it can come in handy when you need it. Hopefully one of these solutions worked for you.
