Are you constantly having problems with the Caps Lock key on the Magic Keyboard? It may not be responding when typing. Or maybe it’s just an LED indicator that may be constantly on or not lit at all.

Incorrectly bound modifier keys, faulty Bluetooth connection, outdated system software and many other reasons can cause Caps Lock on Magic Keyboard to not work.

How To Fix Magic Keyboard Caps Lock Not Working

If the Caps Lock key on Magic Keyboard does not work, you can try to fix the problem yourself. The following troubleshooting tips apply to the following scenarios:

The Caps Lock key does not respond and the LED remains on. Caps Lock key is unresponsive and the LED remains off. The Caps Lock key is responsive, but the LED is always on.Caps Lock key is responsive, but the LED is always off.

Note. If you’re troubleshooting built-in Magic Keyboard issues on a 2020 or newer MacBook Air or Pro, skip to any non-applicable fixes.

Check the Mac’s Modifier Key Settings

Caps Lock of your Magic Keyboard not responding completely? In such a case, the best place to start is by checking to see if the key is configured correctly on your Mac, and not just tied to another modifier action (like Control, Option, or Command).

1. Open the Apple menu and choose System Preferences.

2. Select “Keyboard”.

3. On the Keyboard tab, click the Modifier Keys button.

4. Open the menu next to the Select Keyboard button and select the Magic Keyboard from the list (if not already selected by default).

5. Make sure the Caps Lock Key is set to Caps Lock and nothing else.

Or click the Restore Defaults button to reset all modifier keys on the Magic Keyboard.

Turn Magic Keyboard Off & On

Then try turning off the Magic Keyboard and then turning it back on. This often fixes random issues with unresponsive keys or a glitchy LED indicator. You can find the power switch on the front right side of the device.

Reset the Mac’s Bluetooth Module

Reset Magic Keyboard to Factory Defaults

Open your Mac Control Center again, hold down the Shift and Option buttons, but this time choose Factory Reset on all connected Apple devices. If this option is not available on your Mac, move on to the next fix.

Restart Your Mac

If the Magic Keyboard Caps Lock key is still unresponsive or the LED light stays on, it is recommended that you restart your Mac. So save your work, open the Apple menu and choose Restart. Then click “Restart” again to confirm.

Update the Mac’s System Software

Reconnect Magic Keyboard to Mac

Completely disconnecting and reconnecting Magic Keyboard to Mac can also fix broken Bluetooth connection.

1. Open the Apple menu and choose System Preferences.

2. Select Bluetooth.

3. Select the X next to Magic Keyboard.

4. Select “Uninstall” to disconnect the Magic Keyboard from your Mac.

5. Turn off and turn on the Magic Keyboard. It should momentarily appear on the Bluetooth screen. When this happens, select “Connect”.

Delete the Mac’s Bluetooth Preferences

The next fix involves deleting your Mac’s bluetooth preferences file. This is another way to improve the reliability of Bluetooth devices.

1. Open a Finder window and choose Go> Go To Folder from the menu bar.

5. macOS will automatically create a new Bluetooth settings file. You can always restore a deleted file from the Recycle Bin if you have additional problems in the future.

Clean the Magic Keyboard

The Magic Keyboard is less prone to dust than Apple keyboards with butterfly switches. But if Magic Keyboard Caps Lock is still not responding, applying a few short bursts of compressed air under the key won’t hurt.

Reset the Mac’s NVRAM

If none of the above fixes worked, the problem might be in your Mac’s non-volatile RAM (non-volatile RAM). NVRAM stores system-critical data that can become out of date and cause problems with external peripherals. If you are using a Mac with an Intel processor, you have the option to manually reset it.

2. Turn it on, but immediately press and hold the Command, Option, P, and R keys.

3. Hold the keys until you hear the Mac beep twice. If your Mac uses the Apple T2 Security Chip, simply release it as soon as you see the Apple logo a second time.

If resetting NVRAM does not resolve the Caps Lock key on the Magic Keyboard, reset the SMC (System Management Controller).
