How to Fix iPhone Error 4013.
Your Mac or PC will throw error 4013 if you have connectivity issues when restoring your iPhone. This is a serious problem when you have an iOS device that either refuses to go beyond the startup screen or boots directly into recovery mode all the time.
iPhone error 4013 may indicate a hardware failure. However, there are a number of fixes you can work on before coming to this conclusion. They should also help if you keep getting a similar error while trying to restore the iPad
In addition to error 4013, the suggestions below also apply to error codes 9, 4005, and 4014. These errors are closely related and often occur for the same reason.
macOS, Windows, and iTunes update
Updating macOS, Windows, and iTunes can help fix known software flaws that are preventing your computer from successfully restoring your iPhone or iPad.
Mac – update macOS or iTunes
Starting with macOS Catalina, your Mac uses the Finder to connect to your iPhone. Since the program is built into the operating system, you must update macOS itself to get the most recent version of Finder. Go to Apple menu System Preferences Software Update to install the latest updates for your Mac.
If your Mac has an older version of macOS that uses iTunes, open the Mac App Store, go to the Updates tab, and install any pending iTunes updates.
PC – update iTunes and Windows
On Windows, your computer uses iTunes to communicate with your iPhone. To update the software, open the Help menu in iTunes and select the Check for Updates option.
If you’re using the Microsoft Store version of iTunes, you won’t see this option because Windows updates Microsoft Store apps automatically. If you have automatic updates turned off, open the Microsoft Store, choose Downloads and Updates from the More menu, and then install any pending iTunes updates.
Apart from iTunes, it’s also a good idea to update Windows. To do this, go to Start Settings Update & Security Windows Update.
Force restart iPhone
Forcing an iPhone to restart (or hard reset) and then try to restore the device can help you avoid iPhone error 4013. However, the process is different for different iPhone models. It’s the same with the iPad.
iPhone 8 series and newer / iPad without a Home button
Press and release the volume up button. Press and release the Volume Down button immediately. Then press and hold the side / top button.
When the iPhone or iPad restarts and the Apple logo appears on the screen, release the Side / Top button.
iPhone 7 series only
Press and hold the Volume Down and Side buttons at the same time. After the iPhone restarts, release both buttons as soon as you see the Apple logo on the screen.
iPhone 6s series and earlier / iPad with Home button
Press and hold the Home and Side / Top buttons. Release both buttons as soon as you see the Apple logo on the screen.
Enter recovery mode
If your computer does not detect your iPhone or iPad after a forced restart, you must manually enter recovery mode.
Start by connecting your device to your computer. Then press the buttons required to force a restart. However, do not release the button (or buttons) that you hold down when you see the Apple logo. Shortly thereafter, you will enter recovery mode. Then you can choose to restore your device.
Update before restore
Have you tried updating your iPhone or iPad? After entering recovery mode, use the Refresh option in Finder or iTunes.
If you do not see error 4013 during the update procedure, restore your device.
Direct Delivery
Are you using a USB hub to connect your iPhone or iPad to your Mac or PC? Try plugging it directly into a USB port on the computer itself. If it already exists, switch to a different USB port.
Switch Cables
Cables can fail and cause all sorts of connection problems. If you’re still getting iPhone error 4013, try switching cables, preferably one from another iOS or iPadOS device. Avoid using third party cables unless they are MFi certified.
Use another computer
iPhone error 4013 could be the result of an underlying problem with your computer. If you have another Mac or PC handy, try restoring your iPhone or iPad from it. Remember to update your macOS, Windows, and iTunes before doing this.
Restore using DFU Mode
If you’re still getting error 4013, use DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode to restore your iPhone. It works in a similar way to the standard recovery mode but helps you recover devices with serious problems.
However, the keyboard shortcut to enter DFU mode can be quite complex and may take several tries. Make sure to connect your iPhone or iPad to your computer before starting.
iPhone 8 series and newer / iPad without a Home button
Press and release the volume up button. Press and release the Volume Down button immediately. Then press and hold the side / top button.
Once the screen turns off, start holding the Volume Down button (along with the side button) for 5 seconds. Then release the side button, but keep pressing the volume down button.
After entering DFU mode, the screen on the iPhone or iPad will remain blank, but the device will appear in Finder or iTunes in recovery mode. Then release the volume down button.
Only for iPhone 7 series
Press and hold the volume down and side buttons for 8 seconds. Then release the side button, but continue to hold the volume down button.
Once you enter DFU mode, you will see the recovery mode screen in Finder or iTunes. The iPhone screen will remain blank. Then you can release both buttons.
iPhone 6s series and earlier / iPad with Home button
Press and hold the Home and Side / Top buttons for 8 seconds. Then release the Home button but continue to hold the Side / Top button.
Once you enter DFU mode, you will see the recovery mode screen in Finder or iTunes. Your iPhone or iPad screen will remain blank. Then you can release both buttons.
Exit DFU mode
Use the forced restart button combination for iPhone or iPad model if you want to exit DFU mode.
Book an appointment
If the above fixes did not work, then it is highly likely that you are experiencing a hardware problem with your iPhone or iPad. Since it is dangerous to open or repair anything inside without the proper equipment and training, it is best to take your device to the nearest Genius Bar or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
