Have you ever enjoyed browsing the Internet using IE until all of a sudden you get this horrible “Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close” error message, after which IE shuts down completely and you lose all your tabs along with any forms that you could fill? Now that I rigorously use Chrome, this has never happened to me, but it has happened to Internet Explorer all the time.
So, for those poor fellows who are still using older versions of IE, here is a short list of steps you can take to try and fix the underlying problem. Many things can be causing this error, so you might have to try several different methods before the problem is fixed. If you click the link to view the data contained in the bug report, you might see something like this:
Error sign
Application name: iexplore.exe AppVer. 7.0.5730.11 ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 61eb77e0
So what can you do if you get this error? Try each of the following steps and see if the problem goes away.
Method 1
Method 1
Open IE, go to Tools, Internet Options, or click the settings gear icon in the upper right corner and then delete the temporary Internet files. In the Browsing History section, click the Delete button, and then select the Temporary Internet and website files check box. If you downloaded the executable file that is causing the problem, it will be removed.
Method 2
The second method
On some versions of IE, script debugging may be the cause of this problem. You can try disabling script debugging by going to Internet Options again, clicking the Advanced tab, and then checking the Disable Script Debugging (Internet Explorer) and Disable Script Debugging (Other) check boxes.
Method 3
The third method
Run anti-spyware and anti-virus software on your computer. Download MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and Spybot and run them to remove all malware. Both programs have free versions and that’s all you need. Also download CCleaner and HiJackThis and run both applications. Delete unnecessary entries that you see when starting HiJackThis (you will need to read the documentation to know what to delete).
Method 4
Fourth method
Go to Start, Run, and then type MSCONFIG. Click the Startup tab and clear all check boxes, then restart your computer. This disables all startup programs from starting. If you still get the error, go ahead and enable them one by one and see what issue comes back. This is called a clean boot.
Method 5
Fifth method
Disable Smarts tags in Internet Explorer by going to Tools, Internet Options, Advanced tab and unchecking Enable Smart Tags.
Method 6
Method 6
Install the latest updates from the Microsoft Update website. If you started getting this error AFTER installing the latest updates, you will have to perform a system restore to the point before the updates were installed. You can access System Restore by choosing Start, All Programs, Accessories, and then System Tools.
Method 7
Method 7
Use the System File Checker to find changes or modifications to files protected by Windows. If any files have been overwritten, deleted, etc., SFC will automatically find the correct version of the file and replace it. You can launch SFC by choosing Start, then Run by typing CMD and then typing sfc / scannow in the command window.
Method 8
Method 8
Reregister the Internet Explorer DLL files. Click Start, then Run, type CMD, then type the following lines and press Enter after each:
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase .dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll
Method 9
Method 9
Disable all third-party add-ons for Internet Explorer by clicking Start, Control Panel, Internet Options, Advanced tab, and then unchecking the “Enable third-party browser extensions” checkbox in the View section. You will need to scroll down a couple of lines.
You can also launch IE without add-ons by choosing Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and clicking Internet Explorer (no add-ons).
Method 10
Method 10
Sometimes a compatibility issue causes a problem with the video card. To check and see, go to Internet Options, Advanced and check the Use software rendering instead of GPU rendering checkbox under Accelerated Graphics.
Method 11
Method 11
The last option you can try is to reset Internet Explorer. Click “Advanced” again in IE options and at the bottom you will see a “Reset” button.
Also, be sure to check the Delete personal settings box when the pop-up dialog box appears to confirm the reset.
Hopefully, if you get this error, one of the above methods will fix the problem. If you have questions about how to complete a step, leave a comment and I’ll try to help you! Enjoy!
