In the AppData folder, find the Discord folder. Right-click the folder and select the Delete option. Before doing this, you need to make sure Discord is not running (including checking for the discord.exe process in the Windows Task Manager).

This will put the Discord AppData folder in your trash. On your desktop, right-click on the trash can icon and select the “Empty Trash” option to completely remove the files from your computer.

After deleting the Discord folder, AppData Discord will automatically regenerate a new set of config files, forcing you to log back into your Discord account. This should fix the problem for many users, but if it doesn’t, you will need to try one of the additional steps below.

Remove and Reinstall the Discord Desktop App

When Discord has an issue with a fatal JavaScript error (or indeed any other Discord error), the next step is to completely uninstall and reinstall it. This is to ensure that any corrupted files don’t interfere with Discord when trying to launch it.

In the selected folder, right-click Discord.exe and select the Properties option.

On the Compatibility tab of the Properties window, select the Run this program as administrator option, then click OK to save.

After enabling Discord admin rights, double-click Discord.exe in Windows Explorer to start it. You may need to accept the access control popup to allow Discord to launch by clicking Yes. You may also need to provide a username and password for the Windows Administrator account if you are currently using a standard user profile.

If another app or service is preventing Discord from working properly, running it as an administrator should fix the problem. The exception, however, is that you have an antivirus installed that can stop Discord from starting in the user’s confidential folder (for example, the AppData folder).

Check Your Antivirus Isnâ€™t Blocking Discord

Unlike typical apps, the Discord desktop app runs from the AppData folder itself. Each version of Discord is considered temporary, with the update file (update.exe) running first to ensure that the latest version of Discord is automatically installed.
