How to Download YouTube Videos to iPhone.
I spend a lot of time on YouTube and came across many interesting videos that I would like to save on my iPhone. However, YouTube only allows you to upload videos in the app, and that too if the creator has allowed it. If you’ve also been looking for ways to download YouTube videos to your iPhone, then let’s get started.
In this article, I will introduce three methods; one using the app using the Siri shortcut and the other using the Safari web browser.
Download YouTube videos to iPhone
Method 1 – Use Siri Shortcut
Using the Siri shortcut is one of the easiest ways to download YouTube videos. Not all shortcuts work, however, as YouTube keeps updating its API, breaking the shortcut. I found a shortcut that works flawlessly and you can use it to download YouTube videos.
Go ahead and install this shortcut using this iCloud link on your iPhone.
After that, just open the YouTube app and upload the video. Click the Share button next to the Like / Dislike button and scroll the pop-up menu to the right.
Click the More (…) button to download the latest iOS Shared Sheet. You will find compatible shortcuts here, click DownTube to start the download process.
This may take a few seconds depending on the length of the video, and once the video is ready, you will see a popup to save the video to iPhone. The video will be saved directly to the Files app at 640 or 360 pixels. Unfortunately, there is no way to set the default resolution.
Pros
- Download YouTube videos using Siri.
- Runs from the YouTube app.
Cons
- Unable to select video resolution.
- It is not possible to load only audio from video.
- The video is saved in the Files application, not in the Camera Roll.
The second method – using a third-party application
Video Saver is one of the few web apps that still works and lets you download YouTube videos to your iPhone. It is very easy to use the video downloader app. Here are some of the pros and cons of using this method.
Start by installing the app on your iPhone from this link.
Before we can download the video, you need to copy the URL of the YouTube video. You can do this either from the YouTube app or from your web browser. To copy the URL from the YouTube app, open the video and click the Share button next to the Like buttons, and then click the Copy Link button to copy the URL.
Now that you have copied the video url, continue to download the video using the app. Open the app, tap the + button in the upper right corner of the screen and select Internet from the list of options.
Now paste the YouTube video link you copied earlier into the address bar at the top and hit “Go” on your keyboard.
The video will download in the web interface, just click the big red play button and you will see a popup to download the video. Click the Download button on the pop-up menu.
Your video will start downloading in the My Videos section. After the video has finished downloading, click the Options button next to your video. Click to select “Save to Camera Roll” from the list of options. Your video is now saved in the Photos app.
The only drawback to this method is that you cannot choose the resolution of the video you are uploading. If this is what you want to control, the next option is for you.
Pros
- Password protected video.
- Download multiple videos at the same time.
Cons
- No way to download high definition videos.
- Advertising.
Third method – download using a web browser
Savefrom.net has been around for a long time and is primarily aimed at desktop users. However, iOS 13 has added a downloader feature to Safari, which means we can download videos directly from this website.
This method only works reliably with Safari on your iPhone running iOS 13 or higher. Open this Safari app. Go to en.savefrom.net by clicking this link and pasting the link to any YouTube video in the green text box. The website will generate a video preview and show a download button below. After choosing the resolution, click “Download”.
You will get a popup with a Download button and a browse button. Click the Download button to start downloading. You can find it in the Downloads folder in the Files app.
However, if you want to save the video in the Photos app, you can also do that. Just click the Downloads icon in the upper right corner next to the address bar. Tap the video you just downloaded.
It will open for preview, click the Share button in the lower left corner of the screen. Select “Save Video” from the list of options on the shared sheet. That’s it, your video is now in the Photos app.
Pros
- Multiple Permissions
- No need to install an application; works in a web browser.
Cons
- Videos above 1080p have no sound, only video
- Some videos can only be downloaded via webm and cannot be changed.
