If you’re an avid Twitter user, you probably have a lot of content on the platform that you don’t think is worth sharing. The good news is that there is an app to help you get rid of awkward tweets.
But if you’ve made the decision and decided to leave Twitter for good, learn how to delete your Twitter account as well as how to back up to keep your memories on Twitter.
Before You Delete Your Twitter Account
Even if you made the decision to delete your Twitter account, you can still keep your memories on Twitter. Unfortunately, you cannot download or save any of your interactions with other Twitter users, such as liked tweets or your follower list.
However, you can back up your media, tweets, and retweets.
How to back up your tweets
To download data from Twitter, follow these steps.
- Open the Twitter app in your browser or smartphone.
- On the left, select the menu icon (three horizontal dots in the browser or three horizontal lines in the mobile application).
- Select Settings & Privacy.
- If you are using a computer, select “Your Account”> “Download Data Archive”. If you are using a smartphone, choose Account> Your Twitter Data.
- Twitter will ask you for your account password. Fill it out and select Confirm.
- Under Twitter Info, select Request Archive.
When your data is ready, you will receive a Twitter notification and an email with a link to download a ZIP file containing an archive of your data.

How to Delete Your Tweets
If you’re not sure if you want to delete your Twitter account completely, you can start by deleting some (or all) of your tweets. There are several ways to do this.
How to delete a single tweet
One way to rid your Twitter account of your tweets is to view them one by one and delete them individually.
To delete one tweet in a browser, go to your Twitter account and find the tweet you want to get rid of. Then select the three dots in the upper right corner of the tweet. Select Delete from the drop-down menu.
To delete a tweet using the smartphone app, go to your Twitter page and find the tweet you want to delete. Then click the drop-down arrow next to it and select Delete Tweet.
How to delete all your tweets at once
If you’ve been using Twitter for a while and have never deleted your tweets, you might want to delete several of them at once. Twitter doesn’t have a built-in feature for this. However, you can use an app to work around this limitation.
TweetDelete is a free app that lets you delete your tweets in bulk. TweetDelete works on both computer and smartphone, so you can use any of your devices to delete your tweets.
To delete multiple tweets in TweetDelete, follow these steps.
- Open TweetDelete on your computer or smartphone.
- Select “Sign in with Twitter”.
- TweetDelete will ask you for permission to access your account. Select Authorize Application.
- Select “Delete Tweets”.
- You can choose whether you want to delete all your tweets or just tweets from a specific period of time. You can also use the text search tool to filter the messages you want to delete. After setting the options, select Delete my Tweets.
If you have more than 3200 tweets that you want to delete, you can repeat this process until they are all gone. You can also use this app to automatically clean up your tweets every few days.

How to Delete Your Twitter Account
Before you get rid of your Twitter account, make sure you are prepared. Aside from backing up your Twitter data, it’s important to decide if you want to create a new Twitter account in the future and use the same username and email address for it.
To make your username and email address reusable in the future, you need to change them on your current Twitter account before deleting it. To do this, go to Settings & Privacy> Account Information. Then change your username and email address.
After confirming your new account details, you can delete your Twitter account by following these steps.
- Open the Twitter app in your browser or smartphone.
- On the left, select the menu icon (three horizontal dots in the browser or three horizontal lines in the mobile application).
- Select Settings & Privacy.
- If you are using a computer, select “Your Account> Deactivate Your Account”. If you are using a smartphone, choose Account> Deactivate Your Account.
- Read the Twitter post about deactivating your account in the “Other Things You Should Know” section. Then select Deactivate to confirm.
You will have 30 days before your account is removed from Twitter. If you haven’t changed your mind, just wait 30 days for your Twitter account to be deactivated.
How to reactivate your Twitter account
If you’ve deactivated your Twitter account by mistake, don’t worry, Twitter has a way to restore it. If you change your mind within 30 days of deactivating your Twitter account, you can easily get it back. To reactivate your account, sign in anytime before the 30-day period expires and confirm reactivation.
Should You Leave Twitter?
Before you decide to permanently delete your Twitter account, make sure you know exactly why you are doing it. For example, if you’re just tired of one (or more) Twitter users ruining your enjoyment on the site, consider blocking them.
