Have you ever wanted to part with all the online accounts that you have on your devices and just return to the peace and quiet that was before the Internet? With the internet noise of ads, trolls, fake news, promotional and unwanted emails, it’s easy to feel like you’re living in a cluttered world and just want to get rid of it all.
While it takes a couple of clicks to log out of some websites and social media platforms, there are those that make you jump over more obstacles, while others make quitting nearly impossible.
In some cases, legality can prevent a service from permanently erasing anything you have posted publicly in the past, which means some vestiges of your relationship remain forever.
If you’re ready to make a clean but consistent sign out of Gmail, read on to find out how to delete your Gmail account.
Factors to consider before deleting your Gmail account
If you’re sure you want to delete your Gmail account, here are a few things to consider before clicking the Delete button.
- Once you delete your Gmail account, you will not be able to send or receive emails from that address, so you will permanently lose access to it. Before turning it off, notify your contacts so they know about the change and give them an alternate address to send messages. If someone tries to write you an email after deleting the account, their emails will come back and they will receive a delivery error.
- If your Gmail account is linked to third-party services, you may lose access to those services. To resolve this issue, update your email address with all your third-party connections so you can easily recover your accounts or reset passwords. It also helps inform your bank, especially if that particular address is associated with your bank account.
- If you need all the data from your Gmail account, deleting it may prevent you from accessing that data. However, you can upload your data before permanently deleting your account.
- Your username will no longer be available to you or anyone else who wants to use it in the future. Google does this to prevent identity theft or impersonation from using your old email account.
- Your Google account will not be deleted. Deleting your Gmail account does not delete your Google account, which, among other things, remains associated with your YouTube account and search history.
- You can recover a recently deleted Gmail account, but only for a few weeks when Google lets you try to recover.
