If you’re using a local account to sign in to Windows 10, it’s probably a good idea to create a password reset disk in case you ever forget your current password. All you need is 5 minutes of your time and a spare USB drive. Pretty much everyone has some of these little USB drives that you get at events or as gifts from banks, etc., so make good use of one of them.
It’s worth noting that you cannot create a password reset disk if you sign in to Windows using your Microsoft account. It also makes sense because this is an online account and you can reset this password by going to Microsoft’s website.
Another thing to keep in mind is that anyone can use a password reset disk to reset your password, so be very careful when you label it and where you store it. If it falls into the wrong hands, they can block your access to your computer.
Create a Windows 10 password reset disk
To get started, open the control panel and click on “User Accounts”. You should see an option on the left called Create a password reset disk. If this option is not available, you are not using a local account to log on to Windows.
Make sure the USB stick is already connected to your computer, otherwise you will receive an error message. This will launch the Forgotten Password Wizard.

Click Next and select the USB drive you want to use as your password disk.
Click Next and you will need to enter your current Windows password before proceeding.
On the next screen, it will create a reset disk and show you a green progress bar. It only takes a couple of seconds to reach 100%, after which you will click “Next”.
That’s literally everything for creating a disc. Click Finish and you now have a Windows 10 password reset disk. I will also show you how to use it to reset your password.
Use a password reset disk
Using a password reset disk is as easy as creating one. When you are at the Windows login screen and enter the wrong password, you will see the option to reset your password.
Clicking on it will open the password reset wizard. Click Next to continue.
Again, you need to plug your USB drive into your computer and select it from the list.
If everything went well, you should be taken to a screen where you can enter a new password and a password hint.
Click “Next” and you will receive a confirmation that your password has been changed. You can now log into Windows with your new password! Again, be sure to store your USB drive in a safe place and don’t use it for anything else. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to comment. Enjoy!
