How to Connect Wired Headset to PS4.
The Sony PS4 controller features a completely redesigned design and a more natural grip. The optional touchpad and lightbar offer additional controls and gestures, but one of the most interesting things about the PS4 controller is the built-in audio jack. Even though the PS4 came with gaming headphones, I couldn’t get them to work with my Apple Earpods right out of the box.
I thought there might be others who faced this problem, so today I am going to show you how to get audio from the audio jack of a PS4 controller.
Connect a wired headset to the PS4
First things first, turn on your console and go to Settings using your controller.

On the settings page, you will see several options. Scroll down to Devices. Press X on the controller to open the selected option.
This page has a list of all the devices you can connect to your PS4. You can pair Bluetooth controllers, certified Sony PS headsets, keyboards and mice. To route audio from the headphone jack on your controller, navigate to Audio Devices by pressing X.
If you play a lot of online games and chat with your team, use quality headphones with a microphone. Not all headphones are supported by PS4 controller, but you can easily find out which headphones work with your PS4 controller.
Now plug your headphones into your PS4 controller and press X to select Output Device.
You will see several output devices. Select Headset Connected to Controller.
PS4 does not route all audio to the headphone jack. If you want game audio to come from speakers and only chat audio from headphones, you can leave the settings as they are. Or, if you, like me, love to play in the middle of the night and don’t want to disturb anyone in the house, direct all sound to your headphones. Go to Output to Headphones and choose All Audio from the list of options and you’re done.
All audio will now be streamed from the headphones, including in-game audio and chat audio. You can leave the audio jack for chats only, but I like getting all the audio out of the headphones. I play solo anyway. However, if you do play multiplayer, make sure the microphone is working and check the audio levels. You can find the settings on the same page under the Microphone Level Adjustment section.
The headphone jack on PS4 is a standard 3.5mm jack, which makes us wonder which headsets are supported by the PS4 controller? Are Apple headphones supported on PS4? To answer these questions, we will have to dive down the rabbit hole.
Does the PS4 controller support portable earphones?
The short answer is yes, and the long answer depends on the circumstances. There are many headphones with mic that work great with your PS4 controller.
You can buy PS4-compatible headsets with mic on Amazon for as little as $ 30, but a good pair of headsets will set you back at least $ 50-60. I tested several headphones with and without microphones and the results were different. The PS4 controller supports all headphones and earbuds that don’t have a microphone, and I had no problem with any of them. I was able to reproduce the sound transmitted to the headphones without any problem. However, the lack of microphones creates obstacles. You cannot communicate with your teammates during an online brawl.
Why does the PS4 not support earphones?
Mobile headphones with a 3.5mm jack have two types of configurations; TRRS and TRS. All headphones with microphones are TRRS configuration. The connectors have a slightly different configuration that determines whether your headphones will work with your PS4 controller or not.
CTIA is a new standard first adopted by most manufacturers. It is widely used in smartphones and PS4 accessories. If you are using standard OMTP headphones with PS4, the microphone will not work. This could be one of the possible reasons why the Apple Earpods microphone is not working on PS4.
I tested the following headphones and they worked fine when receiving audio. The only problem was that most of the earbuds and earbuds didn’t have a microphone, and the ones that did didn’t work.
- Sennheiser CX 200
- Mi Basic Headphones
- Apple Earpods
- AKG Headphones
- Audio Technica M20X
- Bose QC35ii
You can solve this problem with a simple OMTP to CTIA connector. It changes contacts to make it compatible with PS4. Amazon has a variety of options that will likely cost less than $ 5.

Get the sound from the audio jack of the PS4 controller
It was a fast way to stream audio through the audio jack on the PS4 controller instead of the traditional route. This is a great feature that makes gaming a lot more fun at times when you can’t turn up the sound at full volume. Let us know in the comments if you have any problems with setup.
