How to Connect and Map PS4 Controller to Android TV?.
While testing the Mi Box to see if it can run games that require a controller, I ran into a small problem. Even though you can navigate your Android TV using a Bluetooth controller, there is no way to go directly to the home screen. So I thought, why not remap the keys on the DS4 controller and use it as a remote replacement. In this article, I will show you how to use and remap PS4 controller buttons on Android TV. Let’s start.
I’m using a DS4 (Sony Dualshock 4 controller) for this article, however if you have any other wireless controller it will still work the same and you can even map extra keys on the wireless controller effortlessly.

Pair the controller with Mi Box S or Android TV
Take your controller and put it into pairing mode, I am using a DualShock 4 controller and to put it into pairing mode you need to press and hold the SHARE & PS button at the same time until the white light flashes.
Once the DS4 is in pairing mode, go to the settings menu on your Android TV or, in my case, the Mi Box S. In the Remote Accessory section, you will find the Add Accessory option.
You will likely see a DS4 controller labeled “Wireless Controllerâ€. Select to start pairing. The LED on your DS4 controller will stop flashing after successfully connecting to Android TV.
What buttons work?
The D-pad acts like directional keys on all Android TV boxes I tested. However, the return and select buttons differ from device to device. On the Mi Box S, the X is for back and the O is for selection, but on the Shield TV X is Select and O is Back.
You can navigate the entire Android TV with these six buttons, however if you want to add more functionality, you can remap the keys on your DS4 controller and customize it to suit your needs.
Unfortunately, I was unable to get the DS4 touchpad to work on Android TV. If I can manage to get it working in the future, I’ll update the steps here.
Set PS4 controller keys on Android TV
For key mapping, we will use the standard button mapping key that we can find in the Play Store. I used the Button Mapper app which works great and lets you customize each button. Install the app on your Android TV from the Play Store or download it from the internet.
Open the app and select “Add Buttons” in the “Buttons” column. This will open a blank page that will store the button settings you add in the future.
Click “Add Buttons” and a pop-up window will appear with a “Click a Button” sign. It will appear on the screen immediately after pressing the button.
After that, just click the button you just added to the app. You can map the same button in three different ways; single touch, double touch and long press. Select the Configure check box to initiate remapping.
For example, I wanted to remap the PS button on my DS4 controller to act as the master button. To do this, select the “One Click” option from the list, and a list of options that you can assign to the button will open. Select Home and press OK.
This is it. The PS button mimics the Home button, and every time you press it, you go to the home screen. The app lets you map a wide range of functions to any button, you can map volume buttons, media keys, and even take screenshots. Using the same method, I mapped the volume keys to the L1-R1 buttons on the DS4 and the volume keys to L2-R2. If you run into any problems during this process, let me know in the comments below, or contact me on my Twitter and I’ll be happy to help.
