How to close tabs in web browsers on Android devices.Web browsers for Android continue to get better. They are incredibly responsive, load content quickly, and render pages well. But with more browsing options comes inevitably a cluster of tabs, leading to clutter and potentially slower productivity.Whether you’re a tab-opening enthusiast who gets lost or someone who just wants a cleaner browsing experience, knowing how to close browser tabs on Android can be a game-changer.This guide will help you reduce the list of open tabs in Google Chrome and other browsers such as Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge and Opera.
Closing browser tabs using the tab switcher
Every Android browser allows you to delete browser tabs through the tab switcher interface. Only:
- Tap the icon representing the number of open tabs to bring up the tab switcher. For example, in Google Chrome it is located in the upper right corner next to the address bar, and in Mozilla Firefox it is in the lower right corner.
- Click the X button next to a tab preview to close that tab.
Another—and faster—way to close tabs is to swipe the preview cards in the tab switcher to the left. The exception is Opera: you’ll have to swipe them up.
Delete all browser tabs at once
If you have dozens of browser tabs and want to start over, you can delete them all at once. Only:
- Look for the three-dot icon or stack of horizontal lines inside the tab switcher.
- Click on the menu item Close all tabs.
If you’re using Microsoft Edge, you should find the option to close all tabs in the bottom left corner of the tab switcher.
Close the current browser tab
You don’t have to visit your browser’s tab switcher to close the tab you’re currently on. You can use a hidden gesture instead. Only:
- Long press the tab number indicator.
- Click Close tab.
This method does not work in some browsers. For example, long pressing the tab indicator in the Samsung Internet browser opens a new tab. In this case, use the tab switcher to close the tab.
Closing tabs in Chrome tab groups
Google Chrome supports tab groups, making it even more convenient to close individual tabs within them. Only:
- Load a group of tabs.
- Click the site icon on the tab in the bottom bar, and then click the X icon to close it.
Alternatively, you can go to Chrome’s tab switcher, tap the group, and click the X button next to the tab preview to close it. Click X next to a group in the main tab switcher area to quickly close everything inside.
Tabs are closed
Browsing the web on your Android phone becomes much more convenient if you know how to manage your ever-growing tabs. The instructions above also work when browsing anonymously in your browser, such as using incognito mode in Chrome.
