Are you thinking of selling your old iPhone? Do you want to switch networks? Before doing any of this, find out how to find out if your iPhone is unlocked or not.
An unlocked phone can be used with any carrier and you will get a better price. If it’s locked, you may need to reconsider your plans or take additional steps to unlock it. For example, an iPhone bought directly from an Apple Store may be unlocked, while a phone purchased with a plan from companies such as Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon may be locked to their network.
Let’s take a look at various methods to check if your iPhone is locked or unlocked.
How To Tell if Your iPhone Is Unlocked or Not From the Settings
The easiest way is to use the Settings app. You don’t have to jump over hoops to find out if your iPhone is locked or unlocked.
Select Settings> General> About. You will be taken to the same page where you found your IMEI number. Scroll down and find the Carrier Lock option. It should be two lines above the IMEI.
If your carrier lock information says “No SIM Card Installed,†then your iPhone is not tied to your network. Otherwise, it should be written that the SIM card is blocked. In this case, you will need to talk to your carrier about how to unblock it.
This method is by far the easiest, but there is a catch. Some iPhone users report that this option is not included in their settings. If you are one of them, you should try any of the other methods described below.
How To Tell if Your iPhone Is Unlocked or Not From Your Carrier
If you want to know for sure, try calling your network operator. They should be able to tell you if your iPhone is unlocked or not.
However, before contacting them, please prepare the International Mobile Equipment Identity or IMEI of your phone.
What is IMEI?
IMEI is a 15-digit number unique to every iPhone or every smartphone.
Network providers use it to connect your phone to the network and track down stolen or lost devices.
How to find out the IMEI of your phone
Once you contact your network operator, they will most likely first ask you for your phone’s IMEI before providing you with the information you need.
To find this number:
Select Settings> General> About. You should go to a page that looks like this:
Scroll down the page to find out your phone’s IMEI.
Once you get this number, you can try to contact your network. However, it may be difficult to contact your carrier, or it may take some time before they can return to you.
Also, your carrier may not provide you with this information over the phone if you bought a used iPhone.
Try a SIM Card From Another Carrier
For this method, you will have to remove the Subscriber Identity Module or SIM card and try using another carrier’s module. You can borrow one from a friend, or try a shopper’s SIM if you’re selling an old iPhone.
To remove the SIM card from iPhone, turn off your phone and remove the case. You will also need the SIM ejector that comes with your phone.
Press and hold either of the volume buttons and the button on the other side of the phone until the power off slider appears on the screen. Swipe the slider to the right.
3. With iPhone off and removing the cover, locate the SIM card tray. It should be on the left or right, depending on your iPhone model.
The SIM card tray looks like a very narrow oval that fits snugly against the side surface. You will also find a tiny hole at one end of the oval where the SIM ejector goes.
4. Insert the SIM injector into the tiny hole and push down until the SIM tray pops out.
5. Once it opens, pull out the tray and replace the SIM card.
6. Insert the tray back into your phone, then turn it on by pressing the side button until the Apple logo appears.
If your iPhone can read data from the SIM card, you should see signal bars in the upper right corner of the screen. Otherwise, an error message “SIM card not installed†or “SIM card not provided†will appear.
You can also go to Settings> General> About, which will take you back to the IMEI page.
Scroll down to the “Network” or “Operator” option. It should show the SIM card operator or network.
How To Tell If Your iPhone Is Unlocked or Not With an Online IMEI Checker
If you don’t have time to contact your carrier or the patience to remove your iPhone SIM, you can use the online IMEI Checker.
Since we’ve already discussed how to find it, this shouldn’t be a problem.
Then just google “iPhone IMEI checker” and you will see several options to choose from. Many of these websites offer services such as checking the iPhone carrier and checking the SIMlock status. One of the safest sites is IMEI.info.
If you are buying a used iPhone, you can also use the iPhone blacklist check, which will tell you if the phone is reported lost or stolen. It will even tell you if the phone is connected to unpaid bills. Checking the lock status costs $ 3 at IMEI.info.
Another good site for checking the blacklist status or if the phone is on installments (and therefore blocked) is IMEIPro.info. They have several different IMEI checks that give you more details (iPhone, ATT, etc.).
Note, however, that many of these websites will charge you for their services. However, if you don’t mind shelling out a small amount in exchange for convenience, you should consider this option.
Choose the Method That Works for You
Choose the most convenient way. Remember, unlocked phones can cost more if you resell them. So, these methods are worth knowing when you buy an iPhone from a carrier under a contract.
