How to Check AppleCare Support and Warranty Status for Your Mac.
If you own a Mac and need a repair or replacement, you first need to determine if the Mac is still under warranty. For most other manufacturers, this means having to go through an annoying process where you search for some kind of serial number or tag number, and then call support for warranty status.
With a Mac, it’s really easy. In the System Information dialog box, they have a tab that allows you to check the status of your service and coverage and shows you options for additional support. In this article, I will show you how to view this information.
Check warranty status
To check your warranty status, click the Apple logo icon in the upper left corner and select About This Mac.
Click Allow and it should load the webpage in Safari. Here you will need to enter the code and then click “Continue”.
You will now get a quick overview of three things: whether this purchase was valid, whether you have phone support, and whether there is repair or service coverage.
As you can see in my case, all warranty options for my mid 2009 MacBook Pro have expired. You can purchase technical support by phone or pay post-warranty costs for any repairs.
If you click on the second link, “Show my service and repair options,” you will be taken to a page where you can either contact Apple Support or make an appointment at the Genius Bar to bring your car.
If you choose to contact, you can ask Apple to call you or talk to someone online. Both of these options are free. If you are told that you need to send the machine in for repair, it will obviously cost you if the warranty expires. For example, here’s a pricing page for replacing a Mac battery that is no longer under warranty.
The latest AppleCare Protection Plan is only useful if you purchased your Mac in the last 60 days. If so, you can go ahead and add AppleCare warranty coverage. After 60 days, coverage can no longer be added and you will only receive a one year limited warranty and 90 days free phone support.
Overall, Apple makes it easy and straightforward to check your warranty, determine the cost of repairing and repair your device. It’s not necessarily cheap, but at least you know in advance how much everything will cost. Enjoy!
