If you buy a new mouse, you may be surprised at its performance. A higher DPI (dots per inch) rating for your mouse means more precision in capturing the smallest movements. This is not always ideal, and you can reduce the sensitivity of your mouse by decreasing its speed.
Fortunately, it’s easy to change mouse speed in Windows 10. To do this, you can use the built-in Windows mouse settings or a third-party solution. Your mouse may even have a shortcut button to switch between settings. Here’s what you need to do to change the mouse speed.
Change mouse speed in Windows 10 Settings
If you want to adjust your mouse speed and overall mouse sensitivity, the best place to start is in the Windows 10 settings area. Windows allows you to change various settings that can affect how you use your mouse or trackpad, including the ability to change button actions, line scrolling speed, and speed. cursor.
- To change any of the built-in mouse settings in Windows 10, you will need access to the Windows 10 Settings pane. To do this, right-click the Windows Start menu and select Settings.
- From the Windows Settings menu, select Devices to enter this menu.
- Click “Mouse” in the left menu to access some of the basic mouse settings. From here you can change the mouse scrolling speed and line length, as well as change some of the basic actions of the mouse buttons.
- For more mouse settings, click the Advanced Mouse Options option in the Related Settings section on the right (or at the bottom if the window is too small).
- On the Buttons tab of the Mouse Properties window, you can change the double-click speed. This is the speed it takes to complete the double-click action for Windows to register it. To change this, move the slider to the left to decrease the speed, or to the right to speed it up.
- You can change the speed of the mouse cursor on the Pointer Options tab. To do this, move the slider under the Select Pointer Speed ??section, moving it to the left to slow it down, or to the right to speed up the cursor up. If you find that your pointer is not as accurate, select the Increase pointer precision check box.
- If you are satisfied with the changes you made, click OK to save and close the window. Any changes you make will be applied automatically, and you can quickly change or undo them if necessary.
Use Windows Registry Editor to change mouse sensitivity
If you are comfortable with customizing the Windows Registry, you can use the Windows Registry Editor to change some of your mouse sensitivity settings. This may allow you to more accurately adjust the mouse speed compared to using the Windows 10 settings menu.
- To do this, press Ctrl + R on your keyboard to open the Run dialog box. Type regedit in the box and click OK to open it.
- Using the registry navigation menu on the left, navigate to KEY_CURRENT_USER Control Panel Mouse to view the registry entries for mouse settings.
- You will see various registry entries for mouse settings, but one of the most important is the MouseSensitivity entry. Double click the entry to change the value to any number up to 20.
- You can also adjust the precision of cursor movements using the MouseSpeed, MouseThreshold1, and MouseThreshold2 entries. Your mouse movements will double if MouseSpeed ??is equal to or greater than MouseThreshold1 and quadruple for MouseThreshold2. The values ??represent the distance traveled by the pixels.
- These entries have a default value of 0, but you can see their default values ??by first checking the Improve Pointer Precision check box (Windows Settings> Devices> Mouse> Advanced Mouse Settings). If you want to set it to maximum, set MouseSpeed ??to 2 and set MouseThreshold1 and MouseThreshold2 to 0.
- When finished, close the Windows Registry Editor. Any changes you make should be applied automatically, but you may need to reboot for some of the changes to take effect.
Using a third-party mouse settings app
While cheaper combinations of mice and keyboards usually come without software, more advanced gaming mice often come with customization apps from the manufacturer that allow you to customize and modify their behavior. They can also help unlock additional features supported by your mouse, but not directly by Windows.
If your mouse has a resolution button (like many gaming mice
– / One example of software that you can use to control mouse settings is Logitech Gaming Software, designed to support Logitech gaming equipment, including mice and keyboards. Installing this software will allow you to control various mouse settings, including speed. Check your mouse manufacturer’s website first to see if this is offered for your mouse model. If this is not the case, you may find that software not specifically designed for your mouse will work with some features, but this is not guaranteed. 
Make Changes in Windows 10
Once you know how to change mouse speed in Windows 10, you can start looking at other settings that you can make to your settings. You can change the keyboard language to improve your language skills, or change the display settings to improve the display quality on Windows 10.
If you make too many changes, don’t worry, as you can pretty quickly reset Windows settings and restore them to their defaults.
