How to Change the Startup Sound IN Windows 10.
Tired of the boring sound your Windows PC makes when it boots up? There are two things you can do to update the Windows 10 startup sound. You can either turn off the startup sound or change it to your preferred jingle. Better yet, you can take things to a higher level by customizing the Windows 10 startup sound, perhaps to your favorite song or the title track from your favorite TV show.
Changing the startup sound of your Windows 10 computer is easy. However, depending on the configuration of your device, you may encounter some difficulties in the process.
But don’t worry, we’ll walk you through all the troubleshooting steps and methods.
Change the Windows 10 Startup Sound
Note. If your computer has an older operating system, please refer to this guide to change the startup sound in Windows XP, Win 7, and Win 8.
Follow these steps to change the startup sound of your Windows 10 computer.
1. Go to Settings> Personalization and click Themes in the right sidebar.
2. From the Themes menu, click Sounds. A new window will open where you can change your PC’s sound settings.
A faster alternative is to enter change system sounds in the Windows search box and select “Change system sounds”; this is the first option in the results.
3. Click the Sounds tab and find Windows Logon under Program Events.
Note. If the Log on to Windows option is missing in the Program Event box, you must enable the startup sound using Windows Registry Editor. See the (Modifying Startup Sound Registry Files) section below for how to do this.
4. Click the Test button to listen to the current / standard startup sound of your PC. To change the startup sound to a system-preset sound, click the Sounds drop-down button.
5. Scroll through the preset startup sounds and select the one that interests you.
Click Apply and then OK to save your changes. Remember to use the Test button to play and preview the sound before making your selection.
You can also follow similar steps to change the computer shutdown sound. In the Program Events window, click Exit Windows and select a preset startup sound from the Sounds drop-down menu.
If you prefer to use your own or third-party audio as your computer startup or shutdown sound, follow the steps in the next section.
How to Set a Custom Sound as Your Windows 10 Startup Sound
Using a custom or third-party song / music as the Windows login sound can be a little tricky and requires extra effort. But this is a pretty simple process.
Before we dive into the details, there are a few things you need to know.
- The audio file must be located in the C: Windows Media folder on your computer.
- The audio file must be in .wav format.
Once you have an MP3 file, you can easily convert it to WAV format using a free online tool like Convertio.co. We recommend keeping the file size as small as possible, less than 1 MB.
FreeConvert.com has an online WAV compression tool to compress WAV files. If you convert audio files very often, you should try some great software applications that allow you to effortlessly convert music files to different formats.
Move the audio file (WAV format) to Local (C:)> Windows> Media and follow the instructions below to change the computer startup sound to a new custom sound.
1. Enter “change system sounds” in the Windows search box and click “Change system sounds”.
2. Click the Sounds tab and find Windows Logon under Program Events.
3. Click “Log on to Windows” and click the “Browse” button.
Note. To change the shutdown sound, click Exit Windows and click the Browse button.
4. Select the audio file (WAV format) that you moved to the Media folder and click Open.
5. Finally, select the Play sound when Windows starts up check box. Select “Apply” and then click “OK” to save your changes.
Modify Startup Sound Registry Files
If the registry files that are responsible for the computer startup and shutdown sound are excluded from Control Panel, the Windows Logon and Windows Logoff options will not be present in the Sound Settings menu.
Follow these steps to modify the login and logout registry file. But before doing that, be sure to back up your computer’s registry.
1. Launch the Run box (Windows key + R) and type regedit in the dialog box. Click OK to continue.
2. Paste the directory below into the registry editor search box and press Enter on your keyboard.

3. Double-click the registry file named ExcludefromCPL.
4. Change the Value parameter to 0. Leave all other parameters as they are and click OK to continue.
If you want your computer to beep when shutting down, you can also modify the registry file that is responsible for shutting down or sound when you log off in Windows 10. To do this, go to step # 5. Otherwise, go back to the previous section to change computer startup sound.
5. Paste the directory below into the registry editor search box and press Enter on your keyboard.

Windows 10 Startup Sound Not Changing? Try This
If you changed your computer’s startup sound but it still plays the default jingle, it is most likely due to the length of the audio file. For Windows 10, the maximum startup sound duration is 4 to 6 seconds.
To fix this problem, trim the audio file (remember, WAV format) to 6 seconds and try again. If the startup sound still doesn’t change, reduce the file length to 4 seconds. You can use an online audio trimming tool or trimmer (such as Clideo.com) to trim the length of your audio file.
The same maximum length requirement applies to the shutdown sound in Windows 10. So, if you changed the computer shutdown sound but it still plays the default sound, also trim the audio file to a maximum length of 4-6 seconds.
