How to Change Notification Sound for Facebook Messenger.
Several Facebook Messenger users are complaining about a strange problem. The app automatically changes the notification sound. This can be annoying because after a while you get used to the melody. Many users like to use custom notification sounds because they like them, sound better, and help them differentiate between different messaging app notifications.
Today we will see where this error came from, how to fix the problem with the sound of notifications in the messenger and how to change the sound of the notification in the messenger to the one you need. Let’s start.

How to change Facebook Messenger notification sound inside the app
Open Messenger on your smartphone and click on the profile picture Notifications and sounds. You will then click here on Notification Sound to change the message tone and the Ringtone option to change the ringtone.
That’s the problem. There is no way to select notification sounds in Messenger. However, it does extract sounds from system notifications. We know from experience that no two smartphones are alike, and every manufacturer loves to supply phones with their own individual sounds. That is why when you open the list, you will see different sound files than what I see on my Mi phone.
Therefore, notification sounds will differ from device to device. There is no way to select the audio file that you downloaded from the Internet. Sadly, this is how it is. There is also no option to select a different notification sound in Messenger for Android for group messages. Messenger isn’t very flexible when it comes to notifications, huh?

Here’s a bummer. If you are using an iOS smartphone or tablet, you also cannot change the default notification sound. This applies to both messages and call alerts. What you can do is turn off notifications in the sound section of the app. This will mute the sound when the app is open on your phone.
Another option is Do Not Disturb. This will disable all Messenger sound notifications even if the app is not open or the phone is locked.
How to permanently change Messenger notification sound from Settings
Many users complain that the Messenger app automatically changes the notification sound on their phone. Most of these users say that the filename “2131755087” is set as the default signal, even if they do not have this file installed.
Curious.
The incident only happens to Android users, however it is visible in a number of smartphone manufacturers with different OEMs. I found a simple solution to fix this error permanently.
Forget about the Messenger app. Open Android settings and go to Notifications & status bar App notifications Messenger.
You can now customize different notification sounds for different types of Messenger messages. Tap Chat & Calls and then Ringtone to select a ringtone when you receive a message or call.
You can also change the notification sounds for messages and group chat mentions. This option is not available even in the Messenger app as we discussed earlier.
In fact, there is a separate setting for notification sound for stories, ongoing calls, location sharing, and chat headers. Just tap to open each setting, then select the Ringtone option to choose your favorite sound. When you click on a sound, it plays once, so you can judge whether you like it or not.
Other options include the ability to control whether you want to see notifications, hear any sound or just mute it, feel vibration and LED light. In my opinion, these additional options are just the icing on the cake.

It’s worth noting that Android settings will take precedence over Messenger app sound notifications. This means that even if the app behaves strangely and accidentally changes the notification file, you have nothing to worry about. Just install and forget.
Change notification sound for Facebook Messenger
As you read above, there are two ways to change the Messenger notification sound. One of them is to do it from an application that is very limited and does not work for all users. Some users have also complained about a bug where the notification sound for instant messengers changes automatically and often without their permission or consent. Much better is the way that works from the Android settings area.
As always, if you find another way to do this, please share it with us in the comments below.
