How to Boost your Laptop Speed in 5 Simple Steps.

Since you are reading this article, I think you are also disappointed with the speed of the laptop. After a few months, I brought my laptop in and noticed that my laptop’s processing speed had dropped significantly.

I knew that the speed would slow down as new software was loaded and the hard drive filled up. In this case, it was not only that. My laptop took about 30 seconds to boot, programs stopped responding if I opened more than 2-3 of them, and so on. But luckily I was able to overcome this with simple tweaks here and there in Windows Settings.

Therefore, I decided to share my experience with you on how I managed to increase the speed of my laptop in 5 simple steps.

Step 1: Delete all unnecessary files using Disk Cleanup.

Windows offers a very useful feature called Disk Cleanup. It removes temporary files, empties the trash and removes other system files that are now useless to the system.

How to enable Disk Cleanup:

  1. Go to Start All Programs Accessories System Tools Disk Cleanup.
  2. In the Drives list, click your hard drive. the drive you want to clean up, and then click OK.
  3. Select the check boxes for the file types you want to delete and click OK.

Update – Disk Cleanup is not available in Windows 8

If you are using Windows 8 as your OS, go to the start menu and enter disk space, then delete the files you don’t need.

To clear the temp file, open a command prompt, type% temp% and press Enter. You will be redirected to your temporary files in the folder. Go ahead and delete them too.

Step Two: Defragment the Hard Disk Drives

Continuously deleting files and creating new ones, adding and removing programs over a period of time leads to fragmentation of your disks. To solve this problem, an excellent built-in tool called “Disk Defragmenter” appeared in the window. This tool consolidates fragmented data so that your computer can run more efficiently.

How to enable:

  1. Go to my computer (win + E) and select the drive you want to defragment.
  2. Right click it and go to properties tools Disk Defragmenter.

To determine if you need to defragment the disk, click Analyze Disk. If the number exceeds 10%, you should defragment the disk.

  1. Click Defragment Disk.

Step Three: Disable unnecessary startup programs

Many programs start automatically when Windows starts, they do not harm your computer in any way, but use system memory at startup and thus slow down our laptop. If you rarely use this program, why not uninstall it at startup, save precious memory and reduce your laptop’s boot time.

How to disable unnecessary startup programs:

Open the run command (win + r), type “msconfig” without curly braces and press Enter.

The tab under startup unchecks programs that you want to remove from startup.

By removing them, you do not delete them completely, it just prevents them from starting every time you start your computer. When you’re done, click OK.

Step 4: Uninstall the program that you have never used

One thing you must have noticed is how fast your laptop uses to work when you bought it brand new, as it gets older it gets slower. One of the main reasons for this is the accumulation of unnecessary programs. It is recommended that you uninstall all programs that you do not plan to use. This will not only free up disk space but also make your system run much faster.

How to uninstall a program:

  1. Go to Control Panel Programs Uninstall Programs.
  2. Select the program you no longer want, right-click and select Uninstall.

Refresh

Windows 8 has some additional apps like weather, news, videos, etc. If you don’t plan on using them too, then uninstall them too. You can do this by clicking the window button and then typing “Free up disk space” on this computer.

Step 5: This step consists of many little things that we often neglect.

Run fewer programs at the same time

Check for viruses at least once a week.

Keep your laptop cool by regularly cleaning the fan and plunger.

Clean your registry regularly.

Do not connect your laptop to many external devices at the same time.

Still!! If you haven’t noticed any significant improvements, it’s time to upgrade your RAM and increase your processor capacity
