If you are active on the Internet, hiding your Gmail address is quite difficult. Someone will add you to their mailing list or send you an email directly. There may also be times when you don’t want to receive emails from someone you previously spoke to.
While Gmail gives you the option to unsubscribe from newsletters and has a good spam filter, it is these messages that go through the filter and then go to your main inbox. But don’t worry, this has a solution. All you have to do is block the sender of the email. Here’s how to block email in Gmail.
How to block email messages on the Gmail web
You can block emails right from the email interface (just like Instagram and Facebookcreate a special filter to send an email address to the Spam folder. Gmail’s email blocking feature does it for you.
- Open the Gmail website in any browser and sign in with your credentials.
- Open the email from the sender you want to block.
- Click the Menu button in the upper right corner.
- Select the Block (sender) option.
- Confirm in the pop-up window by clicking the “Block” button.
- Gmail will now inform you that all new emails from this sender will be spam. If you want to send the current email to spam, you can click the Move to spam button.
How to block Gmail mobile emails
The process for blocking email in the Gmail app for iPhone and Android is very similar.
- Open the Gmail app on your iPhone or Android smartphone and make sure you’re signed in to the correct account.
- Open the email you want to block.
- Click the Menu button in the upper right corner.
- Click the Block (Sender) button in the pop-up window.
- The sender will be blocked immediately (unlike with Gmail on the web, you don’t need to confirm the action).
- If you would like to send an email to a spam address, you can click the Report Spam button.
How to unblock an email sender
Want to receive emails from a blocked sender? You can reverse your decision and unblock the email sender at any time.
- Open the Gmail website in your browser. In your Inbox, click the Options icon and select the View All Options option.
- Here go to the Filters and Blocked Addresses section.
- Scroll down to the end of the section. Here you will see a list of all blocked addresses. To unblock one, click the “Unblock” button.
- If you want to unblock multiple addresses, select them and then click the Unblock Selected Addresses button.
- Confirm your action in the pop-up window with the “Unblock” button.
Now the email address will not be marked as spam. New messages from email will now go to the Inbox instead of the Spam folder.

You won’t find this feature in the Gmail app for iPhone and Android To unblock a sender on a mobile phone, you need to find an email from the sender. Then press the Menu button in the email and select the Unblock (sender) option to unblock them.
How to unsubscribe from Gmail on the web
If you receive too many emails from the newsletter, you can unsubscribe instead of blocking the sender.
To do this using the Gmail web client, follow these steps.
- In the web Gmail client, sign in to your account.
- Open the email you want to unsubscribe from.
- Find the Unsubscribe button next to the sender’s name and click on it.
- In the pop-up window, click the “Unsubscribe” button to confirm.
- If you don’t see the Unsubscribe button in the Gmail interface, go to the bottom of the newsletter email and look for the unsubscribe link. Click on it to unsubscribe from the email.
Now you have successfully unsubscribed from the mailing list and you will no longer receive new letters from the mailing list.
How to unsubscribe from the Gmail app
Similarly, you can unsubscribe using the Gmail app on your iPhone or Android smartphone.
- Open the Gmail app on your iPhone or Android smartphone.
- Open the email you need. I want to unsubscribe.
- Click the Menu button on the top toolbar (above the email interface).
- Select the Unsubscribe option.
- Confirm in the pop-up window by clicking the “Unsubscribe” button.
You have now unsubscribed from the email newsletter and you will not see any updates in the newsletter.
