How To Add a Transition in Premiere Pro

Finding and adding transitions is a very simple process. You can find all the transition options in the Effects panel, which can be accessed from the very top options bar. Select this and a panel will appear on the right. Follow these steps to add a transition.

In the Effects panel, go to the Video Transitions section.

Choose any of the transition types and find the one you want to use.

Press and hold a transition, and then drag it to the beginning or end of the clip in which you want to use it. Or, place it between two clips to transition between the end of one clip and the beginning of the other.

There are many different transitions in Premiere, and some may work better for your project than others. For more natural transitions, see the Dissolve section. Most of the other transition effects may seem overwhelming or gaudy, but depending on your project, they might work, especially if you decide to edit the transition yourself.

How To Edit a Transition

Maybe you don’t want the transition to take that long, or you don’t want it to be so noticeable. Fortunately, Premiere makes it easy to edit transitions in the Effect Controls panel. However, editing a transition is slightly different from editing other Premiere effects. So follow these steps to get the correct answer.

Go to the Effect Controls panel in the upper left corner when you’re working in the Effects tab.

Now, in the timeline, select the transition you added to your clips. You should see the Effect Controls panel change with squares labeled A and B and a mini timeline.

You can change the start of the transition by going to the bar below square A. Click and drag the small circle to change the start value. This will cause the transition to start closer or further from the start of the second clip. To change the ending point of the transition, use the bar below square B.

You can also change the overall length of the transition with the Duration value. If you hover over this value, you can click and drag left or right to change it. This will enlarge the entire transition for both clips.

You can also quickly align a transition to start where the clips were trimmed. Go to the Align drop-down list and select where you want the transition to begin or end depending on the section.

By using these effect controls, you can smooth the transition and blend in perfectly with your project. Plus, any edits you make will be modified in real time, so you can watch them affect your video as you edit.

Depending on the transition you select, you may have more or less options for editing the transition. For example, if you add an immersive video transition, you will be able to edit certain qualities of lighting effects, such as exposure, rotation, and so on. You can usually change them by changing the value or choosing an option from the drop-down list. If this is the case, experiment to see what works for you.

How To Delete a Transition

If you decide that transitions just don’t work in your project, you can simply remove them. Just make sure you want to uninstall it before doing so, as any changes you may have made in the transition will be lost.

There are two different ways to remove a transition:

Find a transition in the timeline and select it. Then press Backspace on your keyboard.

Select a transition in the timeline and then right-click it. Select “Clear” and the transition will be removed.
