How to add famous faces to Google Photos for easy search.
Quickly find pictures of your spouse, child, sibling, or pet by adding names to faces in Google Photos. Face tagging allows you to view all photos of that person or pet, perform quick searches, and organize photos at the same time.
It only takes a minute to include names when adding faces to Google Photos. You can also do this on the Google Photos website or mobile app.
Turn on the Group Similar Faces Feature
When you visit the Explore or Search section of Google Photos, you should see faces displayed at the top. Here you can start adding names to these faces. If you don’t see these photos, turn on the face grouping feature.
This feature uses face detection and recognition to merge photos that show the same person (or pet).
Enable online similar face grouping
Open Google Photos and sign in.Tap the gear icon in the upper right corner.Scroll down to the “Group similar faces” section and expand it.Turn on the toggle for grouping faces. Optionally, you can turn on the “Help contacts recognize your face” and “Show pets with people” toggles.
Your changes are saved automatically, so you can return to the Google Photos homepage or another area using the navigation on the left.
Enable Lookalike Face Grouping on Mobile
Open the Google Photos app on your mobile device.Tap your profile icon in the upper right corner.Select Photo Settings on Android or Google Photos Settings on iPhone.Select an option ” Group similar faces. .Turn on the toggle for grouping faces and, if you like, the other two settings for faces.
You can click the arrow in the top left corner to exit this screen and adjust any other settings as needed. Otherwise, tap the arrow again to return to the main Google Photos screen.
Add Names to Faces in Google Photos
You can add names to faces on the Google Photos website or mobile app. When you do this, your changes are synced, so you only need to do it in one place.
Add Names to Faces on the Web
Select “Explore” in the navigation bar on the left.Select a person at the top of the “People” or “People and Pets” list. You can also use the See All link on the right to see them all.On the top left of the next screen, select Add Name.
Enter the name or nickname of the person or pet.Click Done to save your changes.
You can select the arrow in the top left corner to return to the research screen. You should then see the name you added below the face at the top.
Adding names to Faces on mobile
In the Google Photos mobile app, select the “Search” tab.You’ll see faces at the top under “People” or “People and Pets.” You can select See All on the right to see all faces.Select a photo and then click Add Name.Enter a name and click Done.
Tip: On iPhone, you can also quickly put a name on a face. Click Add name below the photo. Enter a name at the top and hit “Done” on your keyboard. For more tips like this, check out our Google Photos tips and tricks!
Edit a Name for a Face
If you want to change the name you’ve given to a person, you can do so as easily as adding it originally.
Edit name online
Select a photo at the top of the Browse page.Hover over your username on the photo page and select the pencil icon that appears.
Make your changes and click Done. Edit name on mobile
Select the photo at the top of the “Search” tab.Click on the three dots in the upper right corner and select “Change name tag”. You can also select Remove name tag to not display the name at all.Enter a new name or alias at the top and press Done on your keyboard.
See Photos With Faces
Once you add a name to a person in Google Photos, finding photos of that person or pet is easy.
On the web, go to the Browse page and select a photo at the top. You can also enter a name in the search box at the top of Google Photos.
On your mobile device, go to the “Search” tab and select a photo at the top. If you have many named persons, enter the name in the search field.
Hide Photos With Faces
We’ve all been there. There are pictures of people we don’t want to see anymore. Luckily, Google Photos lets you hide photos of specific people or pets. This does not delete photos; it just doesn’t show that face in the Explore and Search sections.
Hide Faces Online
Click the gear icon in the upper right corner of Google Photos.Scroll to and expand the “Group similar faces” section.Select the “Show and hide faces” link under “Group faces”.
Select the face of the person you want to hide. This will place an eye icon with a line through it and darken the thumbnail.Select Done in the top right corner when you’re done.
If you later change your mind and want to display the Google Photos face, follow the same steps to return to that location. Then select the face to remove the icon and show the face again.
Hide faces on mobile
Go to the “Search” tab and select “View All” under “People” at the top.Click on the three dots in the upper right corner and select “Hide and show people” on Android, “Hide and show faces” on iPhone .Select the face of the person you want to hide. Just like on the web, a hidden icon appears on the face and the thumbnail is dimmed.When you’re done, click Done at the top.
To show the face later, follow the same steps and select the face you want to show again to remove the hidden icon.
When you add faces to Google Photos, consider adding names to them. This makes these people and pets easy to find and also easy to find.
