At its core, the Photoshop Brush Tool is designed to draw lines and shapes on your design using strokes. With Photoshop brushes, you can create anything from a variety of patterns and textures, and even change the lighting of your images.
Photoshop comes with a set of built-in brushes that you can use to add special effects to your photos. However, this is a meager selection with a few common styles. If you want more options, you can add more brushes to Photoshop, as well as download them from third-party sites. This is how you can add and install brushes and use them in Photoshop.
How to Add Brushes to Photoshop
To see the brushes installed, select the Brush Tool from the toolbar on the left. Right-click anywhere in the document to open the Brush Options window. Then select the gear icon to open the full list of brushes.
If the pre-installed brushes aren’t enough for you, you can always download and install your own. Adobe Photoshop lets you add new brushes to add shapes, patterns, various structures, and more.
Where to find Photoshop brushes
Many sites offer free Photoshop brushes that you can download and install. However, be careful and only download them from trusted sources to prevent malware in the presets.
Some popular sources for Photoshop brushes include Brusheezy, My Photoshop Brushes, and DeviantArt. If you don’t mind spending a few bucks, you can find a great selection of brushes on the Creative Market.

How to Use Brushes in Photoshop
The Brush tool lets you create unique images and designs in Photoshop. If you’re a beginner, here are some tips on how to get the most out of your brush.
1. Use the Brush Options popup
To get started with brushes in Photoshop, select the Brush Tool from the toolbar on the left. Once you’ve selected a tool, you can customize it using the Brush Options window, which gives you access to a complete list of loaded brushes, as well as shape and size options.
To access the brush options, right-click anywhere in the document or select the drop-down arrow in the upper left corner of the top toolbar. To resize brush strokes, use the Size slider at the top of the Options window.
Some brushes also allow you to change the Hardness setting, making the edges of your strokes harder or softer. Move the mark all the way to the right for a sharper brush, or leave it to the left of the slider for a soft airbrush effect.
2. Use the Brush panel
To access additional settings, open the Brushes panel by selecting the icon in the top toolbar to the right of the Brush Settings drop-down arrow. As you change these individual settings, you will see how each affects the final look of your brush strokes.
3. Use brush mode, opacity, and flow
Other settings you can change when using brushes are Mode, Opacity, and Flow. They are also located in the same toolbar at the top.
Opacity and flow work together to help control the thickness of brush strokes.
The mode is exactly the same as the blend modes of layers in Photoshop, except that the changes will only affect individual brush strokes and not the entire image layer.
4. Create your own brush
While there are many options and sites to download brushes, if you need something specific it might be easier and faster to create your own brush. To create a brush in Photoshop, follow these steps.
- Open a new Photoshop window.
- Select the Brush tool and paint the tip of the brush you want.
- Choose Edit> Define Brush Preset from the Photoshop menu.
- Add a name for yours and click OK to save it.
Your custom brush has now been added to the list of brushes and is ready to use.
Time to Master Brushes in Photoshop
The Brush Tool is great for anyone looking to create their own designs in Photoshop or just get creative with editing their images. Like Photoshop filters or presets, brushes are easy to use, even if you’re a complete beginner. However, you can really transform your work in Photoshop if you dig deeper and learn how to use brushes like a pro.
