App-based food delivery services have grown in popularity in recent years along with the rise in popularity of apps like Uber and Lyft Today’s world is faster and more mobile than we could have imagined ten years ago.
The development of the fast food industry has brought convenience and affordability over traditional restaurants. What was a convenience recently can be seen as an inconvenience today, and third-party food delivery apps are trying to challenge that.
Uber Eats has grown in popularity thanks to its passenger sharing service, but there are many apps like Grubhub and DoorDash that are growing. However, each of these food delivery services comes with a completely different set of features and applications.
In this article, we’ll compare Grubhub and DoorDash so you can decide which of these two popular food delivery services is easiest for you to use.
Grubhub vs. DoorDash: availability
If you are in a big US city, you should have no problem accessing dozens of restaurants through Grubhub and DoorDash. Otherwise, you may run into problems, especially with DoorDash.
Although DoorDash became available in all 50 states in January 2019, Grubhub’s service area is much wider. On its official website, Grubhub boasts over 300,000 restaurants (155,000 partners) in over 3,200 US cities. Outside the US, it is also available in London.
Although DoorDash is low by comparison, it is available in the major regions of the US and Canada.
With more years in the industry and a much larger market share, Grubhub has become much more widely available in the US.
Grubhub vs. DoorDash: costs and fees
Commissions are the biggest disadvantage of using services like Grubhub or DoorDash. These apps will require you to pay service fees, shipping fees and tips. With DoorDash, you will be more likely to pay a service fee to both DoorDash and the restaurant you order at.
Grubhub usually does not include a restaurant service fee, but more often requires a minimum order amount. Both services allow you to enter an individual tip amount if the predefined ranges are not satisfactory.
Grubhub has more national partners than DoorDash, which allows them to offer more competitive pricing. Grubhub also offers a wider range of special promotions.
On the Perks page of the Grubhub app, you can find several free shipping and cash offers. By switching from the Redeem tab to the Earn tab, you can also earn other rewards by spending the minimum amount at eligible restaurants.
DoorDash also regularly offers special deals – some of their restaurants offer $ 0 shipping for your first order or for orders over $ 10 – but Grubhub’s provides more savings in the long run.
If you prefer DoorDash and want to save more, try purchasing the Cash App debit card. The Cash App offers a range of bonuses, including one that unlocks a 10% discount on every DoorDash order. It can really add up.
When it comes to costs and fees, it’s mostly a matter of which restaurants you prefer and how you decide to use each app.
Grubhub vs DoorDash: Subscription Service
In February of this year, Grubhub finally released a subscription service to compete directly with DoorDash. Grubhub + offers unlimited free shipping and 10% cashback. It comes with a free 14-day trial and then billed at $ 9.99 per month.
DoorDash’s DashPass has been around for much longer and offers free shipping on orders of $ 10 or more. Free trial twice as long – 30 days.
Both services only provide free delivery to select restaurants. With Grubhub having a much wider choice of restaurants, you’ll get more out of Grubhub +. The 10% Grubhub + discount is especially good if you don’t own a Cash App debit card and can’t get the 10% discount on DoorDash Boost. Otherwise, both services are pretty much the same.
With more perks and restaurants eligible for free shipping, Grubhub + outperforms DashPass.
Comparison between Grubhub and DoorDash: Ease of Use
Both Grubhub and DoorDash are available for iOS and Android, so this is an equal playing field in this regard. However, DoorDash’s UI / UX is much more impressive than Grubhub’s.
DoorDash promotions and specials are neatly organized at the top of the app’s home screen. Opening the DoorDash app gives you immediate access to your favorite restaurants, DoorDash national partners, free shipping deals and more.
The Grubhub app also shows your favorites, partners, and offers, but these are slightly less accessible once you open the app – you’ll have to scroll through the list of restaurants to see them more fragmented.
However, on the My Grubhub screen, you can find a summary view of your saved restaurants, deals, and more. The problem is, it’s easy for most users to assume that this page refers to your account information and is often overlooked.
DoorDash is also climbing higher in the feature department thanks to group orders. Group ordering allows you to send a link to a friend who also has the app installed, which allows them to participate in the order with you.
Both you and this friend can add your items to the order separately, and DoorDash sometimes even offers coupons and special offers for group orders. After that, all members of the group order will be able to see the delivery status and map after placing the order.
The DoorDash app seems to be more advanced and more intuitive than the Grubhub app. If we had to choose one of these services based on application design alone, we would choose DoorDash.
To summarize, Grubhub is more affordable than DoorDash, and Grubhub + is generally more beneficial than DashPass if you don’t have a Cash App debit card. However, when it comes to convenience and functionality, the DoorDash app looks and feels much better than Grubhub. There is very healthy competition between these two services.
