Many of the things you can do in Microsoft Word you can also do in Google Docs. You can insert tables, insert images, and even create drawings. However, one thing you cannot do initially is create borders in Google Docs. In particular, there is no way to create an outline around the page.

However, there are some easy workarounds to draw a border around the page in Google Docs. You just need to jump over a few hoops to do this. In this article, you will learn about all the available ways to solve this problem.

How to Add Page Borders in Google Docs

There are several ways to create a border around your pages in Google Docs. These are all methods of creating a border around one page. Therefore, if you want to create a border for all pages, you will need to repeat your chosen option for all of them.

1. Create a table with one cell

The easiest way to create a border around your Google Docs page is to use a single cell spreadsheet with a border. Since you can fill the text inside the cell in the same way as on the page, it will look like a page with a border.

Select the Insert menu, select Table, and then select a 1 × 1 table.

This will place the table in your document. Since this is just a table with one cell, it appears as a field in the document.

Select either side of the table and adjust the height and width of the table so that it spans the entire page.

When you’re done, your table will become a page border. You can type anywhere in this field and enter just as if you were entering text on the page itself.

You can format text color, alignment, and everything in the same way. This means you have nothing to lose by using a single cell spreadsheet to create a page border in Google Docs.

If you don’t like the look of the table border, or if it appears without it, simply select the table border itself to change its appearance. The formatting menu appears on the ribbon. Use the format icon (pen) to change the border color.

To the right of it, you will see icons for changing the thickness and style of the border (for example, a dotted line instead of a solid one).

2. Insert a picture – field or text field

If you don’t like the spreadsheet option, there is another way to create a page border in Google Docs. You can insert a picture and then create either a regular box or a text box to form a border.

1. Select the “Insert” menu, select “Picture” and then “New”.

3 Ways to Create Borders in Google Docs

2. From the menu, select the Shapes icon, select Shapes, and then click the rectangle icon to insert the rectangular shape into your document.

3 Ways to Create Borders in Google Docs

3. This will insert a rectangle into the drawing tool. You can resize it here if you like (by dragging the borders), or just select Save and Close, as you will have the option to resize it within the document anyway.

3 Ways to Create Borders in Google Docs

4. You will now see a rectangle inside the Google Docs document. Again, you can resize this shape the same way you would for a table. Just select the rectangle and drag either side to resize to the edge of the document.

3 Ways to Create Borders in Google Docs

5. The background border of the document turns blue. So, if you prefer white or some other color, just select the rectangle and click the “Change” button at the bottom.

6. This will open the drawing tool again, where you will find the editing toolbar. Here you can change the fill color, border color, border line thickness and border style.

3 Ways to Create Borders in Google Docs

Just click Save and Close again to reflect your changes in the rectangle of your document.

Note. You can also insert a picture frame into your document instead of a regular shape. However, in essence, they both work the same way, since you can start typing into either one. By default, the text box is rendered without a border, so you will need to edit the text box to add a border if you need one.

3. Insert an image as a page border

The last available approach to creating a page border in Google Docs is to insert a border image from the web. This allows you to use slightly more creative borders and is especially useful if you are making invitations or any other document in which you can use a beautiful border image.

1. Select the Insert menu, select Image, then select Search the Web.

3 Ways to Create Borders in Google Docs

2. You can search the web for borders from Google Docs by typing “borders” or something similar in this search box.

3 Ways to Create Borders in Google Docs

3. Scroll through the images and select the one you want to use. Once selected, click “Insert” at the bottom of the list.

3 Ways to Create Borders in Google Docs

4. This will insert an image frame into your document. Resize this image border by selecting and dragging either side of the border to the edge of the document.

3 Ways to Create Borders in Google Docs

5. Since this is an image, you cannot just select somewhere inside it and start typing. To insert text on top of it, you need to move this border image behind all of the text. To do this, select the image and click the Behind Text icon at the bottom of the image.

3 Ways to Create Borders in Google Docs

6. This will place the image as a layer behind all the text in the document. You can now start typing text inside the image frame.

3 Ways to Create Borders in Google Docs

You may need to use the keyboard tab key multiple times to place the start of each text line within the border itself. This is a small price to pay, however, so you can use creative image borders around your document.

3 Ways to Create Borders in Google Docs

Any of the three ways to create borders described above will work, but the one you choose really depends on the desired result. If you need a quick and easy solution, a table or picture will do. Both allow you to format text as easily as without a border.

However, if you’re looking for something a little more creative, an image border is best, as you can use an image on the web or your own.
