Authentication to outbound email servers
When you receive mail in any mail client, you must use a username and password to confirm that you are entitled to receive emails on your account. A Post Office Protocol (POP) server managed by your email provider processes incoming mail.
However, many email service providers do not require authentication for outgoing mail. Most email service providers use Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) to process outgoing mail.

In Windows Live Mail, you can enable authentication for each account. Before proceeding with the fix below, make sure you are only applying it to the accounts that are experiencing the error. Adding authentication to an account that does not require it can cause additional errors in the account.

You should now see the outgoing mail server properties window. The default is Use the same settings as my incoming mail server.
