Blur and feathering techniques are essential for any photo editor. These tools can help you combine images with ease, making your editing more natural and pleasing to the eye.

While blur and feather are similar, they are two different tools. Feathering refers to softening the hard edges of an image so that it blends into the background or another image. Blur allows you to blur any part of an image so that it becomes fuzzy and blends together.

Both of these methods are useful for many purposes and are easy to learn. Follow these steps to learn how to feather and blur in Photoshop.

How to Feather in Photoshop

First, you need to create a new project in Photoshop or open an image that you want to use as a background for a feather image. Feathering is mainly used to create vignette effects in photographs. So choose a background with which you want your main image to blend in.

After you’ve created your project, open the image you want to feather the edges by choosing File> Open. The image will open in a new tab in Photoshop. You will now be working on this tab to feather the image.

Now select the Marquee Tool, rectangular or elliptical. Use this tool to select the part of the image you want to keep. The selection line will be the edge where the feathering starts.

Once you’ve made your selection, click the add mask icon at the bottom of the Layers panel.

You will only see the part of the image that you have selected. To feather an image, open the Properties panel and you should see a slider labeled Feather. You can use this to soften the edges of your selection. Using this slider, you can feather the edges as much as you like.

If you want more precise selection and feathering, rather than just a rectangle or an oval, you can also select other selection tools, such as the quick selection or the lasso tool, and create a mask using them. This way, you can create smooth selections without jagged edges or jagged edges.

How to Blur in Photoshop

Perhaps instead of blurring the edges of your subject, you want to blur the background altogether. You can also use the selection tools to blur any parts of the image you want. This can help make your piece stand out as well as make it more coherent in general.

Open the image in Photoshop where you want to blur the background. Then use the Quick Selection tool to select the objects you want to keep visible. Now go to Select> Select And Mask.

Here you can make your selection more precise using the brush tools. When you’re happy with your choice, go to the Output Options drop-down menu, and in the Output To setting, select New Layer With Layer Mask and click OK.

You will now have two layers. Background and mask layers with your selection. You can hide the mask layer by clicking the eye icon on the left side of the layer. Then hold down the Ctrl key and click on the hidden layer to see the selection.

Go to Select> Modify> Expand so that the selection extends slightly beyond the edge of your object. Now make sure your background layer is selected by selecting it.

You will want to use Content-Aware for this selection, which can be done by pressing Shift + Del. From the Contents drop-down list, select Content-Aware if not already selected.

Now you can blur the background without blurring the subject. Click the eye icon next to the desired layer and you will only see the background with a filled selection. But make sure your background layer is still selected.

Go to Filter> Blur Gallery> Field Blur. On the right side, you will see a Blur slider, with which you can change the amount of background blur. You can move the circular pointer in the middle to move to where the blur is applied.

You can also set new pointers with the cursor if you want to blur only certain areas of the background. Click OK if you are satisfied with the resulting blur effect. Now you can turn your object back on, and it should stand out much more than before.

How to Blur a Selected Area

You might want to blur only a selected area of â€‹â€‹the image instead of the entire background. This can be for things like hiding people’s faces or confidential information (street names, phone numbers, etc.). It’s incredibly easy to do this with the selection tools.

With an image open, click on the Region tool of whatever shape you want to use, and then select what you want to blur. Then go to Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur.

A window will appear that will allow you to apply a Gaussian blur effect to the selected area. Use the radius slider and move it up to completely blur the area. Then click OK to apply the blur to the selected area of â€‹â€‹the image.
