Evernote Not Syncing? Try These 7 Troubleshooting Tips

If Evernote doesn’t sync across your devices, changes you make to your notes won’t be reflected on your other devices. You will either see a sync error on the screen, or it won’t, but your notes will not sync.

The reasons why the app doesn’t sync your notes can vary. However, by using some of the methods below, you can hopefully be able to fix the problem and sync your notes across all your devices.

Check if the Evernote Servers are Down

One possible reason Evernote won’t sync across your devices is due to downtime on Evernote servers. As you may already know, when you sync your notes, they are first sent to the app’s servers, and then other devices download your latest notes from there.

Evernote has actually created a web page that talks about the status of their service. You can go to this page and see if any of their services are out of order. If you actually see something is wrong, you will have to wait until they return it, ready to use.

If it shows that all of their services are working fine, then the problem on your devices may be different.

Make sure that the maximum number of devices is not exceeded

Evernote offers several plans, and depending on which plan you use, you have a certain number of devices that can use your Evernote account. If you have exceeded this limit for your account type, this is probably why you can no longer sync notes across your devices.

One way to fix the problem is to check your account and remove devices that no longer need to be associated with your account.

Open a browser and go to the Evernote website. Sign in to your account if you haven’t already.
Click your profile icon in the lower left corner and select the Settings option.

Select “Devices” from the left sidebar on the next screen.

You will now see the devices associated with your account. To remove a device from here, simply click on the “Revoke Access” option next to the device.

Confirm the action by clicking “Confirm” on the next screen.

Reinstall the Evernote app on your devices

Sometimes, in order to fix a problem, all you have to do is uninstall the app on your device and then reinstall it from the official website. This will remove any problematic files for the application and give it a fresh chance to create new configurations.

Reinstall Evernote on iPhone

Press and hold the Evernote app on your home screen.
Click the X in the Evernote app.

Select “Uninstall” to uninstall the application.

Launch the App Store and reinstall Evernote on your iPhone.

Reinstall Evernote on Android

Go to Settings> Apps & notifications> Evernote and tap Uninstall.

Click OK to confirm the action.

Open the Google Play Store and install the Evernote app.

Reinstall Evernote on Windows

Launch the Settings app.
Select the Applications option.

Scroll down the list, find Evernote, click it and select “Uninstall.”

Re-download the app from the Evernote website.

Reinstall Evernote on Mac

Open the launcher from the dock.
Option-click the X for Evernote

Click “Remove” to remove the application.

Launch the Mac App Store, download and install the Evernote app.

Empty Evernote Trash then Sync

Sometimes notes in the Evernote trash can cause the app to not sync. Make sure nothing is left in your app’s trash bin, then try syncing the app.

In the Evernote desktop app:

Find the trash item on the left side of the app.
Right-click it and select Empty Trash.

Click the File menu at the top and select Sync to sync your notes.

In the Evernote mobile app:

Click on the three horizontal lines in the upper left corner and select Trash.

Click on the three dots in the upper right corner and select Empty Trash.

Go back to the main interface, click on the three dots in the upper right corner and select “Sync”. Synchronization of your notes starts.

Check the activity log and delete the problematic notes

The Evernote app on your devices actually keeps a log of everything that happens in the app. It also contains error messages, and with this information you can find out what is causing the problem with Evernote syncing on your device.

Launch the Evernote application on your desktop.
Click the Help menu at the top and select Activity Log.

You should see a field with a lot of text. This is where you need to find words that speak of error and exception.
When you find any of these words, see if the title of the note is mentioned next to them. If there is, then this note may be the reason why you cannot sync the application.
Find this note in the app, click on the three dots in the upper right corner and select “Move” to Trash.

Restart Your Devices

You’ve probably heard technicians often tell you to reboot devices when a problem occurs on them. While rebooting does not directly fix the problem, it resets many temporary settings and files on your computer. This often solves many minor problems with the device.

Even if it doesn’t work, you have nothing to lose.

Close the Evernote app on your devices.
Turn off all your devices.
Turn on your devices again.
Launch the Evernote app and see if it syncs.
Perform a manual sync if it does not sync automatically.

Disable an option in Internet Explorer on Windows computers

On a Windows PC, Evernote‘s sync feature uses Internet Explorer. For it to work, you need to make sure that you are not asking IE to stay offline.

In this case, you can fix it as shown below.

Launch Internet Explorer on your PC.

Click the File menu and clear the Work Offline check box.
