Enable Do Not Track and Tracking Protection in IE 11 and Edge

Posted on October 6, 2020 By blog_786 No Comments on Enable Do Not Track and Tracking Protection in IE 11 and Edge

Do Not Track is turned off by default in Internet Explorer 11 and Microsoft Edge. This is mainly due to how much information a website and advertisers can get about you while browsing the web. By default, Do Not Track is disabled in all other major browsers, including Firefox, Safari, Chrome, and Opera. Only in IE 10 is it enabled by default.

This caused a storm of controversy because many groups feel that it should be explicitly enabled by the user, rather than automatically selected for them. This is why it got disabled in IE 11 and Microsoft Edge. However, if you want to enable Do Not Track in IE 11 or Edge, here’s how to do it.

It’s worth noting that the Do Not Track request does not have to be made by the website you are visiting. It is simply a request from your browser and may or may not be tracked by the website.

Enable Do Not Track in IE 11

First open Internet Explorer 11 and then press the ALT key on your keyboard to open the file menu. Click Tools and Internet Options. You can also click on the gear icon on the right.

Click Advanced, then scroll down to the Security section and check the Always send Do Not Track header. In IE 11, this is called “Send Do Not Track Requests to Websites You Visit in IE.”

That’s all. In Internet Explorer 11 (and first introduced in Internet Explorer 9), you can also enable Tracking Protection Lists for even more tracking protection. To do this, click Tools – Tracking Protection.

You can create your own personalized list and add sites that you do not want to be tracked, or you can click Get Tracking Protection List online and download those that have been created and updated by third parties. After you download the TPL, click on it and then click on Enable.

These are two ways that Internet Explorer 11 provides tracking protection. By default, Do Not Track and Tracking Protection are disabled. Now you know how to enable or disable any of them.

Enable Do Not Track in Microsoft Edge

In Microsoft Edge, click on the three horizontal dots in the upper right corner and then click Settings at the very bottom.

Then click on “View advanced settings” again, completely at the bottom.

Finally, scroll down to the Privacy & Services section and enable the Send Do Not Track Requests option.

Now all HTTP and HTTPS requests will include Do Not Track. Plus, if you want more security and privacy, it might be a good idea to just use the InPrivate Browsing feature in IE 11 and Microsoft Edge. This is the same as using incognito mode in Google Chrome. Enjoy!
