Staff Report ISLAMABAD: Electricity shortfall has surged to 6500 Megawatts on Tuesday. It the highest level in the country’s history. According to the Water andPower ministry the total demand of electricity in the country is 18500 Megawatts while the production is 12000 Megawatts.

Utility companies only tell us about the advantages of having a Smart Meter installed in the home.

I feel a bit like an anti-vaxxer in calling out the disadvantages – in the sense that there does not seem actual evidence of any of these downsides to having a smart meter installed. In most of Australia- all new meters installed have to be smart meters and in the state of Victoria – all meters have to be changed from traditional to smart.

The complaints about smart meters pertain to 3 issues – Health, Privacy and Cost. The health issue refers to dangers of Electric & Magnetic fields (EMF) – which occur not only from smart meters but also mobile phones, WiFi, Bluetooth, and even common household appliances. Removing smart meters will not really reduce EMF – and since meters are usually outside the house hence risk from that is very low. It is another matter that EMF occurs in nature anyway and there is no evidence it causes any health issues.

Privacy is about the electricity company knowing what appliances you are using and when – but I fail to see how that gives the company any big insight into my life – unless of course I am running a hydroponic setup! I do not see the fact that I put on the kettle at 8 am to make a cup of tea or the oven at 12 to bake a cake is some sort of secret!

Cost is unavoidable – however in many jurisdictions the elctricity company or the government is stepping to subsidise or even bear the full cost of the new smart meters.

However my complaint against smart meters is that now that they have been in use for some time – the promised benefits have not really eventuated. In actual practice, some of the issues with smart meters are:

1) Smart meters could make it harder to switch gas and electricity providers

2) Smart meters don’t bring an end to estimated bills (or billing errors)

3) Smart meters won’t work if you have a poor signal in your area

4) The display units linked to smart meters are crude and difficult to understand
