Snapchat is a great platform for sending discrete time-synced videos and photos to friends and family. You can share explicit scenes and important messages in the knowledge that the content you share cannot be saved unless you allow it.

Unfortunately, this isn’t always good, especially if you want to save the Snapchat video yourself. If you want to know how to save videos on Snapchat, there are some limitations you need to be aware of. This guide has everything you need to know about saving Snapchat videos.

Can You Save Snapchat Videos?

Snapchat videos may be saved depending on the source. If you’ve created videos yourself, you can export them to your camera roll so you can store them indefinitely and use them outside of the platform. This works on both Android devices and iPhones.

You can also export videos received from other users, but only if they sent the video as attachments in the Snapchat text chat. You cannot save short, synced and full screen Snapchat videos in the app itself. You also cannot save videos that appear as part of a user’s Snapchat story.

You can only save these videos by taking a screenshot or by recording a screen using the mobile screen recorder app. However, attempting to take screenshots or recordings in this manner will alert the other user.

Snapchat is a one-time video platform, so you need to be careful if you’re trying to save a video to Snapchat when you shouldn’t. Not only can this put off your relationship with the video senders, but it can also be seen as harassment and lead to a violation of Snapchat’s terms of service.

Saving Your Own Snapchat Videos

If you recorded a video (or took a photo) on the Snapchat app, you can easily save it before sending it to Android and iPhone devices.

To do this, open the Snapchat app and record a video by pressing and holding the record button in the center of the app’s camera.

To save your captured Snapchat video, click the Download button in the bottom left corner.

The recorded video will now be available on your device’s camera roll, and you can use it anywhere else.

How to Save Your Own Snapchat Story Videos

Snapchat Stories provides an overview of the last 24 hours for that user, showing a carefully curated list of actions, messages, and more. You can export these videos, but you can only do so before the video expires, unless the videos are set to automatically save to The Snapchat Memories section.

To save a Snapchat Story video, open the Snapchat app and tap the Bitmoji or Story icon in the upper left corner.

In the Stories section of your Snapchat user profile, you can choose to save one Snapchat Story video or Snapchat Story videos for an entire day. To save videos of your story from an entire day, click the three horizontal dots menu icon next to My Story.

From the bottom menu, click “Save Story” to save the video to your Camera Roll.

If you want to save an individual Snapchat Story instead, tap an individual video listed under My Story in the user’s profile area to view it.

Tap the hamburger menu icon in the upper right corner to access the settings for this video.

To save the video from history, click the “Save” button below.

As with a video you shoot privately, any videos you save from your Snapchat story will be exported to your device’s camera roll.

Save Attached Snapchat Videos From Other Users

If you received the video as an attachment in your Snapchat text chat, you can save and export it (provided you have permission). The sender will be alerted to this, so you should only do so if you have received permission to do so.

To save the attached Snapchat video, open your Snapchat chat, then tap and hold the attached video. On the pop-up menu, click Save to Camera Roll to export the video.

This will save the video to your camera album so you can use it elsewhere.

Save Full Screen Snapchat Videos and Stories

Unlike pinned Snapchat videos, you cannot save full-screen Snapchat videos posted by other users. These are “typical” Snapchat messages and are temporary by design. Likewise, Snapchat stories from other users cannot be saved by other users in the Snapchat app itself.

The only way to work around this issue is to use a mobile dash cam (or take a screenshot if you want to save the image instead). If you do this, the other user will be immediately alerted and there is no way around this without violating Snapchat’s terms of service.

IPhone has built-in screen recording technology, and owners of Android devices with Android 9 or lower will need to install a third-party app such as AZ Screen Recorder. Owners of Android 10 devices can use the built-in screen recording feature instead.

Android 10 users can start screen recording by swiping down on the notification menu and tapping the screen recorder icon. When this mode is active, you can then replay the resulting Snapchat video or Snapchat Story to record the content you want to keep before clicking the Screen Recorder icon again to stop recording.

iPhone users need to open the Settings app on their phone to start screen recording. From there, click Control Center> Customize Controls and click the + (plus) sign next to Screen Recording to add it to the Control Center menu.

With screen recording turned on, open Control Center by swiping up from the top-right corner (or bottom, depending on your iPhone model). In the Control Center, tap the white round icon, then tap Start Recording to start the recording process.

Record the resulting Snapchat video or Snapchat Story, then open the Control Center again. From there, click on the red round icon again to stop recording.

As mentioned, Android 9 (and older) users will need to install an app such as AZ Screen Recorder to record Snapchat videos and other people’s stories. In the AZ Recorder window, tap the Record icon in the lower left corner to start recording.

Open the Snapchat Story app or video to play and record it. Return to the app, then tap the Record icon again to end the recording and save it to your camera album.

Making the Most of Snapchat

Now that you know how to save Snapchat videos, you can start saving your most important memories. You can take it a step further by using Snapchat’s own Memories section to view a list of previously saved snaps. Do this by swiping up from the bottom in Snapchat camera view.
