Delete All Emails from Gmail With Once Click.
Gmail is one of the email providers that has ample storage space. While this is definitely an advantage, it is also one of the biggest disadvantages that many users face. As users can store gigabytes of free data, email scrubbing becomes less of a priority, leaving users with thousands of emails to go through when they finally use up nearly all of the free storage.
While thousands of unread and junk emails can be intimidating, clearing everything to start over is surprisingly easy and quick. In this guide, we’ll show you how to delete all emails in Gmail, as well as how to set up email to automatically delete old emails, and the importance of regularly cleaning your inbox.
Why Should You Regularly Clean Your Inbox?
If there is still enough space in your inbox, you might be wondering why you need to empty it? Cleaning up your email has many benefits. Here are the main reasons:
Most emails lose their value
The main purpose of an email is to send and receive information. So, if you received a letter five years ago, the data from that letter will probably no longer matter.
For example, if three years ago you had a chain of letters from your former employer, do you think any of the information in that chain is valuable? Probably no. That’s why it’s best to save valuable emails and try to delete unnecessary ones.
Search speed for people and computers
Even if you organize your emails into folders in different projects, it will still be easier to visually scan 50 emails instead of 500 emails. And even if you always use Gmail’s filtering option to reduce the results, it still doesn’t beat the convenience of a cleaner, shorter list.
Not only will you find it difficult to filter hundreds or thousands of emails, Gmail will also take longer to filter a dataset if it contains many entries. Simply put, fewer emails will allow you and Gmail to perform better searches.
Local System Performance
Besides search speed, having a lot of emails can also affect your operating system, especially when using a local email program. For example, the more emails you have, the longer it will take for your email program to start up and sync with the server.
As a result, the backup will take longer. So, even if hard disk space is fairly available, keeping your mailbox to a minimum will always be the best solution.
How to Delete All Emails on Gmail
If you want to delete all emails in your Gmail inbox, all you need is a computer, a Gmail account, and some time. Then follow these steps to completely empty your inbox:
- Open your Gmail account in a browser.
- In your Gmail inbox, select the category you want to remove. Gmail inboxes are divided into three or four categories: basic, social, updates, and promotions. The fastest way to delete emails in Gmail is to delete them by category.
- Select the tab you want to clear by clicking on it. (For this tutorial, we will remove the Promotions tab.)
- In the upper left corner of your screen, check the small checkbox below the mail search bar. This will select every email on the page, i.e. up to 50 emails, and all selected emails will become darker. If you have more than 50 promotional emails, you won’t get everything, but the next step.
- Then you will see a little text at the top of the screen that says, “All 50 conversations on this page are selected.” Select all x conversations in the “Promotions” section. Click the part labeled “Select All x Conversations in Promotionsâ€. This will allow you to select all emails in the category you selected.
- Then select the trash can icon located below the search bar.
- After you click on the trash can icon, a popup will appear to confirm if you want to delete X emails. Select OK.
- After confirming the action, it will take some time, especially if you have thousands of emails. Once the process is complete, you will see a small confirmation popup in the lower left corner of the screen. Just refresh the page and you will see that all your emails have been deleted.
Note. Although you’ve deleted all emails in the Promotion category, that doesn’t mean they’ve been removed from your Gmail account. In Gmail, after you delete an email message, it remains in the trash for about 30 days. Only after this period will Google remove them irrevocably. If you want to speed up this process and delete all your emails permanently, follow these steps.
- Go to the Trash folder on the left side of the screen navigation.
- In the Trash folder, select Empty Trash, which is now at the top of the screen.
- When you’re done, repeat the same process for the other categories of inbox, and you’ll have a clean Gmail inbox to start over with.
How to Delete Emails on Gmail Automatically
If you want to make things more convenient, you can set up a filter that will allow you to automatically remove old emails from your inbox.
- Open your Gmail account in a browser.
- In your Gmail inbox, click the Settings icon in the upper right corner of your screen. Then select View All Settings.
- On the Settings page, select Filters and Blocked URLs. From this menu, select Create New Filter.
- In the pop-up window, enter old_than: X in the contains words field. The X in this command should be the time period you prefer for deleting old messages. The command will be d for days, w for weeks, m for months, and y for years. For example, if you want the time interval to be four years, you would change X to 4 years. Then select “Create Filter”.
- A pop-up window will appear asking if you want to create a filter. Select “OK”.
- Then check the box next to Remove and filter it. Then select “Create Filter”.
This will automatically delete all your emails older than the date you specified. If you want to remove this filter in the future, follow these steps:
- Open your Gmail account in a browser.
- In your Gmail inbox, click the Settings icon in the upper right corner of your screen. Then select View All Settings.
- On the Settings page, select Filters and Blocked URLs and then Remove.
- A pop-up window will appear. Just click OK and Gmail will remove your filter.
Maintain a Clean Inbox
Knowing how to delete all emails in Gmail will allow you to have a free inbox and ensure that you receive all important emails. In addition, you can now configure your inbox to automatically delete old emails so you don’t have to do it manually.
