Change Measurement Units in Microsoft Word

By default, Microsoft Word uses inches as the unit of measurement in dialog boxes and on the ruler. You can change the units to centimeters, peaks, points, or millimeters. This post shows you how to change this setting in Word 2016 and earlier.

Change the units of measure in Word

To change the default units in Word, click File and then Options.

If you’re using Word 2010 or earlier, click the Office button and click the Word Options button at the bottom.

– /

The Word Options dialog box appears. Click “Advanced” in the left pane.

Scroll down to the Display section. Select a unit of measure from the Show Measurements in Units drop-down list. Click OK.

The unit of measure is now different, as shown below in the Indent section of the Paragraph dialog box.

Change the units of measure in Word 2003 and earlier

The procedure for changing units of measure in Word 2003 and earlier is slightly different.

First, choose Options from the Tools menu.

Click the General tab and select a unit of measure from the Units of Measure drop-down list. Click OK.

Again, the unit is different, as shown below in the Indent section of the Paragraph dialog box.

The ability to customize the units of measure used in Word is useful if you are working with a document that needs to have custom margins in a specified unit of measure other than inches. Enjoy!
