Can you access your router through your modem

Posted on June 3, 2023June 5, 2023 By blog_786 No Comments on Can you access your router through your modem

Can you access your router through your modem?

Accessing your home router from inside the network is easy. Just enter the IP address of your router (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) in your web browser. But what about remote router access? Top advertisements

Now, before we get to that, let’s go over some of the reasons you might want to do this.

  1. Your parents regularly ask you to fix their Internet, but you don’t live with them.
  2. You want to check if the children are playing games on their computer at home instead of doing their homework.
  3. You suspect your neighbors are messing around with your Wi-Fi when you are not at home.
  4. Finally, you can connect an external hard drive to the router and access it from anywhere

Why not use remote desktop apps like TeamViewer?

While you can also access your router using applications such as TeamViewer, you need to keep your computer turned on at home at all times. It is not practical if you have been away for more than a couple of days. But routers are always on, whether you are at home or not. Plus, you don’t need to install additional software. All you need is a web browser and you can access your router from anywhere in the world. Let’s see how it works.

If you want to access the router from inside the network; all you have to do is enter the IP address of the router in your web browser. Likewise, to access your router from the outside, you need to enter your public IP address followed by the remote control port number, i.e. 8080. So, if your public IP is 74.12.168.14, you will need to enter 74.12.168.14: 8080 in your web browser.

But there are two problems here

1. For security reasons, this remote control is disabled by default on each router. So, you need to enable it manually on your router.

2. Most home users are assigned a dynamic IP address, which means that every time you reboot the router, your public IP address changes. So, we need to find a way to get around the dynamic IP problem. And for that, we will use dynamic DNS services like Dyn DNS or NoIp.

Since each router is different, the steps for enabling remote management and configuring dynamic DNS will be slightly different for each router. However, the basic principle remains the same. In this article, I will show you this on a Netgear Nighthawk R7000 with custom DD-WRT firmware. Let’s be

How to access the router remotely

Part 1. Enable Remote Access

It’s very easy to enable remote access on your router. All you have to do is enter the router’s IP address or default gateway address in your web browser. Next, enter your username and password. Now that you are on the router’s web portal, look for the Remote Management option. Some routers called this remote access and it’s usually found in advanced settings.

On a Netgear router, this option can be found under Settings> Remote Management.

On your Dlink router, find Tools> Administration> Enable Remote Management.

On your Linksys router, go to Administration> Remote Management.

On a TP = Link router, this option can be found under Security> Remote Management.

Since you are sharing the router’s web portal remotely, it is recommended that you change the default port number. from 8080 to something else. Also, make sure you are not using the default credentials. Change it to something complex, otherwise, anyone can enter your network with a brute force attack.

Part 2: Configuring Dynamic DNS

Since most of us have a dynamic public IP address, this will change in the next few days. So let’s fix this by setting up dynamic DNS. But before that, you need to understand what Dynamic DNS or DDNS really is.

Let’s take this analogy. If I change my mailing address frequently, I will not receive emails on time. Correctly? So instead of giving everyone my address, I’ll give them my friend’s permanent address. Now my friend will receive all my mail and I will tell him my last address. So now he can easily forward mail to me.

So this dynamic DNS is like a friend in the middle. When you register with their service, you must associate your dynamic public IP address with a domain name. And you can use this fixed domain name instead of your public IP address. And they will do the job of updating your IP address in the background.

There are many dynamic DNS providers out there today. Some are free, some are paid. The best way to determine which service to choose is to check which service is supported on your router. Follow these steps.

1. Log into your router and look for the option labeled Dynamic DNS.

If it is not there, you can download the IP updater from any dynamic DNS provider. And put it on a computer that is often used. But almost every router (even the cheapest one) has dynamic DNS options built-in, so you don’t need to worry about that.

I have a special ROM installed on my Netgear router called dd-wrt. It supports DDNS and no-IP. Now, since only the first one is paid. I will choose the second one, that is, no IP. Looking at the interface, I can tell that all I need is a domain name and a username/password.

2. Go to noip.com and create a free account.

3. Then go to the control panel, there you will find the option “Add hostname”. Click on it. A new window will open, enter a new subdomain of your choice and click “Add”.

4. Now copy the new domain name and paste it into the router settings, and also enter your username and password that you used to log into this service. And save your changes.

5. Now, to access your home router from a remote location, enter your domain name followed by the remote management port number. For example – techwiser.ddns.net:8080.

If your settings are correct

you will see the login screen for your router.
