Whenever you experience moderate to severe problems in Windows 11 or Windows 10, you can rely on Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) to fix them. It provides several recovery options that allow you to perform advanced troubleshooting, from running Startup Repair, uninstalling Windows updates, and resetting the operating system.

You have several ways to boot Windows 11/10 into the Windows Recovery Environment. But it depends on the state of the operating system. For example, does Windows work? Or are you having trouble even accessing your desktop? In any case, the methods described below have got you covered.

Once Windows Recovery Environment has loaded, read to learn more about the System Recovery options that you can use to fix Windows 11/10.

Boot via Start Menu

Assuming you can boot into Windows 11 or Windows 10, the most convenient way to get into the Windows recovery environment is to restart your computer as usual from the Start menu.

The only thing you need to do is press and hold the Shift key while selecting the Restart option.

Boot via Settings App

The Settings app in Windows 11 and Windows 10 has a dedicated option to restart your computer into the Windows Recovery Environment. The above method is faster, but it can be helpful if you have problems with the Start menu.

Start by pressing Windows + I to open the Settings app. Then go to System (or Update & Security in Windows 10)> Recovery and select the Restart Now option under Advanced Startup.

You can also configure Windows 11/10 to boot from the system recovery options via the security screen. This is the best method for dealing with a frozen operating system.

If Windows 11 or Windows 10 won’t load or freezes on startup, you can force your PC to enter the Windows Recovery Environment by forcibly shutting it down three times. To do this, press and hold the power button until the screen turns off.

After the third attempt, under the Windows 11/10 logo, the words “Preparing for Automatic Repair” should appear on the screen. When prompted to log into WinRE, select Advanced Options.

Boot via Using Installation Media

If you have a Windows 11/10 installation USB drive or disc, you can use that to enter the Windows Recovery Environment. If you have configured your computer to boot from USB or DVD, press any key when your computer asks you to do so at startup.

Startup Options: This allows you to change the default startup behavior of the operating system. For example, you can use it to start Windows 11/10 in Safe Mode.

Command Line: Loads the command line console. You can use it to run various command line tools like System File Checker and Check Disk Utility.

Uninstall updates: If an issue occurs immediately after applying a feature or quality update for Windows 11/10, this option allows you to rollback.

System Restore: If you have configured System Restore in Windows 11/10, this option allows you to undo malicious changes by returning your computer to an earlier state.
