1 – Texas Instruments TI-86 Graphing Calculator

Product descriptionFor advanced users, the TI-86 graphing calculator has all the power and functionality of the popular TI-85, but has a huge number of mathematics, engineering, and natural science students. TI-86 includes a function evolution table, deep input memory, seven different chart styles with multiple line and shading options, screen areas and direction for differential equations. In addition, the TI-86 has 96KB of user-accessible memory – three times the size of the TI-85. There is also a new job scoring table that displays numerical results for functional, polar, parametric, and differential equation methods. Amazon.comFor advanced users, the TI-86 graphing calculator has all the power and functionality of the popular TI-85, but appeals to mathematics, engineering, and natural science students. The TI-86 includes a performance grading table, deep memory, multiple line and shading options with seven different plot styles, and oblique and directional sections for differential equations. In addition, the TI-86 has 96KB of user-accessible memory – three times the size of the TI-85. There is also a new job scoring table showing the numerical results of functional equation methods as well as polar, parametric, and differential equations. The TI-86 works with the software developed for the TI-85 and includes all of the matrix functions, but includes a new matrix editor that allows the user to view and edit the matrix in two dimensions. You can also display multiple lists and attach formulas to them to automatically count. One of the new aspects of TI-86 is to improve product functionality through machine language software downloadable from the TI website. In addition to its powerful plotting capabilities, the TI-86 also boasts powerful calculus features such as integral, derivative, minimum, maximum, roots, and parentheses. It also supports Z80 assembly language programming. The high-contrast 64 x 128 pixel display shows eight lines of 21 characters each, in addition to a two-level display menu. With TI-86, you can connect via I / O, TI-86 and other TI-85, CBL, CBR and computers. – Dana Van Nyst

Great calculator, I wish they still made these. I use it everyday for work, while it has many functions I don’t use, I love the ability to recall previous entries and edit them (you can go back maybe the previous 10 entries), the larger screen for long formulae entered all at once, and I use the square root enough to want it as a main button function rather than having to hit the 2nd function button first. I tried switching to several other lower versions (especially since I didn’t need the graphing function) but ended up seeking out a used ti-86 to replace my old failing one (multiple single lines stopped working across the screen to where it would obscure results was that a 3 or an 8??, after 15yrs of daily use I guess that’s not bad). .
I was really excited to see this calculator available. It is a simple to use great calculator that does everything you need for math science majors but integrals in calculus. I missed mine, and wish I could buy a new one, but bought this refurbished one. It worked great the first year, but just started eating batteries and died. It didn’t cost much, so I set my expectations accordingly, but really wish it would have lasted a little longer. Now I have to go buy another one. I hope it lasts longer. .
I have an old TI-86 from 2004 that had a screen problem. There is a way to fix it but it involves soldering tiny, TINY wires. Was going to give it a try when I thought why now look for a good used one. Now I have other calculators but I like the TI-86 best so I guess I’m in business for another 10 years or so. .
The TI-86 is one of the peaks in the TI calculators series. It was created and came on the market around 1996, right after the TI-82 and the TI-92. It was better than the TI-82, with a bigger screen, more memory and built-in functions and capabilities. Unlike the TI-92, it could not do symbolic calculations, but its ease of use and versatility quickly made it a favorite. Then, Texas instruments made a very unpopular decision: it decided to discontinue it. Apparently the company was afraid that it would jeopardize the sales of their newer models, the TI-83 and the TI-92 Plus. And so the TI-86 was eighty-sixed leaving its enthusiast to look for it on the second-hand market. I bought a used one on the Amazon, after my old one faltered, after 10 years of use.Since then, TI has introduced newer and faster calculators, with a lot of memory and additional features. Yet, to this day, the TI-86 can hold its own in many respects. Compared to the TI-84, it has a bigger screen (128×64 pixels), uses long variable names (up to 6 symbols), and has superior handling of matrices, lists, and vectors. Compared to the TI-89 and the Voyage 200, the TI-86 has a much more intuitive interface, especially when programming your own functions and programs. As an instructor, I often use both the TI-84 and the Voyage 200 (because these are the one approved for our students), but for personal calculations, I always keep a TI-86 at my side. .
