The first thing anyone does when receiving a Rite in the Rain piece of paper is of course . stick it under the water ! So, after that, usually a first time user will crumble it to see if anything happens. Nothing happens. So. Then it’s rubbing time. Etc. etc. etc. This paper will still work after you’ve machine washed it (tried). Amazing. Once I took it down with me while scuba diving to see if it was working – it did (of course you don’t use paper while diving to take notes – you use a plastic slate – but then, I was curious).This is a true outdoor product – when you need to take notes while it’s raining, or the weather is excessively damp and humid, there is no substitute for it. A good old fashioned pencil is best for writing in wet conditions – that is, until I got the Rite in the Rain pen, that has a pressurized cartridge and works better. I live in Colombia now, and I bought this specifically to be used in the rain-forest, where normal paper just doesn’t cut it. This does. .
I haven’t used Rite in the rain notebooks for a couple of decades. The paper used to be great and wouldn’t even get wavy edges. I’m disappointed with my current notebook though.Granted, I’m writing in the rain, but this paper has clearly absorbed water and become see through. It seems to be a little fragile where it’s wet. I don’t know how the paper will be after it dries, but I hope it stays together. .
I use these pads on a daily basis. It feels pretty much like ordinary paper, though perhaps a bit thicker. I’ve used it in the rain a few times with a pen that had a Fisher Space Pen refill in it, and the two work well together. Don’t believe that you have to get a Rite in the Rain-brand pen to use with this. Even regular pens will write on this just fine when everything is dry, but I can’t say how well regular pens would work when it’s wet. But Fisher pens (or other pens with Fisher refills) work just fine, wet or dry.Note that the tan paper will stand out much less than white paper if it’s left lying around. This is either a good thing or a bad thing, depending on how noticeable you want a left-behind note to be. .
I usually get the hardback notebook but my pants pocket could not fit that size this time around (damn you women’s field gear pockets).Rite in the rain is excellent in the field and only starts to degrade if you cover the pages in abrasives like mud or leave it open inside your pocket. However, the spiral design that is used to hold this notebook together is the dumbest design known to all of field biology. The spirals come apart and you could lose valuable notes because of this. I had to to figure out a field fix for this and wound old bird banding wire around the ends of the spirals so they would stay shut and not lose pages.Good paper, dumb design. .
