This calculator is better than the TI-30 due to its capabilities of performing integrals and derivatives, but the number one reason I bought this to replace my 30 was that it could perform row reduced echelon form (rref) on small matrices. Don’t know what that is? Suppose you have three equations and three unknown variables, rref can solve those variables for you. This can be useful in Statics class or for those taking algebra. For those of you taking linear algebra I think you are going to use something more powerful because the Ti-36X Pro limits matrix size and you are likely to perform other operations that this calculator cannot handle. I’m not going to get into all the features that the 36 has that the 30 does not, but I will mention that I like that the 36 uses E for inputting scientific notation compared to the 30’s x10^n. It takes up less space on the screen and looks cleaner.The physical construction of the calculators are near identical. I find that the TI-36 has more snappy keys, which I prefer, because it better informs me when I have pressed the key and is better at preventing the accidental pressing of other keys. I also like the black color significantly more. Makes it look more sleek and business minded than the color that makes the 30 look like a toy.After having said all that, there is one CON to this calculator in my experience. The silver keys. The coating and texturing is kind of odd in the way they reflect light. Sure they look cool but it is also more difficult to read these keys. I cannot tell you how many times I have accidentally pressed the plus sign instead of the multiplication. Sure, during those times I was in more of a hurry and a bit on the careless side, but the design of a calculator needs to take that into consideration. It would be better if these keys were just black with white symbols instead of attempting to look fancy. Perhaps more use of this calculator will resolve that, but I don’t have this problem with the 30, which places the operation keys in the same locations. Now with that in mind, I still decide to use the 36 instead of the 30 during my tests, even though I wasn’t going to be using the integral, derivative and rref functions. . The best non-programmable TI calculator there is, this is the most powerful scientific calculator allowed on the FE/PE engineering exams. It has some of the familiar button placements that will help transition from the more powerful models, but retains many of the same powerful functions. It even has functions not available on the TI-84 Plus CE:A. You can solve systems of equations with 2 to 3 variables without appropriating matrix functions for the chore. You can solve quadratic equations as well.B. Suppose you need to evaluate a function many times. You can either enter a formula with the appropriate variable and evaluate it at a certain value, or use “table” to list the values at an interval of your choice, say starting x at 0 and step by 0.2. I do have some gripes:1. The arithmetic buttons are placed one row higher than on the graphic calculators, This takes time to adjust.2. After deleting a previous calculation, the “answer” remains, so you may be looking at a previous result but “ans” may carry a different value.3. Some functions, such as with vectors, are cumbersome to produce.4. To convert fractions and radicals into decimals, you need to use the “base n” menu, not the “convert” menu.5. Most importantly, the protective cover is hard to get in and out of. It’s a poorer design than that for the graphing calculator. . Check out the customer images. The main function keys (far right column) are very hard to read. They are not painted black as shown in the ad. They are only a slight indentation on an otherwise bright silver pad. Unless you have 20/20 vision, or better, you will be probably constantly confuse the ( – ) for the divide sign, and the (+) sign with the times sign. It is only issue that I have with this product, but it’s a big one. Otherwise, it seems to function well. I know that it’s a $20 calculator. But, they all are – or less. I would happily have paid $30 or more for a calculator with function keys that I can easily see. But, this is for school, so I had to keep it simple and non-programable. And, if you’re in direct light it can be even worse as the light reflects easily off the silver paint, so you need to hold it a little sideways to avoid reflection. Not a smart color scheme. . As many other reviewers have said, the silver reflective keys are the one big negative with this otherwise awesome calculator. Idea #1 – I did what others suggested and used a fine point sharpie to color in the button etchings. Slightly better, but the reflective paint still made the buttons hard to see.Idea #2 – Turns out the Texas Instruments TI-30XS [https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000PDFQ6K] has the exact same keys as the TI-36 Pro. I swapped my TI-36X keys for the TI-30 keys, and my photo shows the before & after result — completely legible keys! It’s been so much nicer with this mod. Swapped the Arrow keys, 2nd, Vars keys too, since it looked better.Yes, this means I had to purchase 2 calculators (hey I waited until they were on sale, don’t judge me). And I had to completely disassemble both calculators. And I had to dremel the circuit boards out to get at the keys. But it worked! The result was totally worth it. You always have to verify that the given answer looks correct and if you have time, sometimes you have to repeat to double check. At times, it can make you feel like you are losing your mind and wonder if you really did that bad of a job plugging in the values. I know that others in the class with this type of calculator had similar problems. Just beware. In the end, it can get you through a stats class, but you may also lose valuable points from miscalculations. It works great. Has more functions than I’ll probably ever use. Then why do I not recommend it?There is a design flaw.I have attached 3 photos where you see the screen. You’ll notice that when you turn the calculator on and look at it from an angle (as you would if you kept it on a desk while you were testing) the numbers are not legible. Your line of sight has to be almost perpendicular or direct to see it clearly. This does not affect the function of the calculator but it gets inconvenient when you have to hover over the calculator or lift it up to read it. In a test taking setting this constant movement was suspicious enough to warrant a warning from the proctor. . I bought this calculator for a chemistry course that didn’t allow graphing calculators. I was hesitant to switch from my TI-89, which I love, and I will say this calculator took some getting used to. The buttons do not seem to be as sensitive as those on the TI-89, and I found that for the first several months I was constantly making “typos” that were actually just the calculator failing to register buttons that I had pressed. The buttons are 100% accurate as long as you type carefully, hitting the keys individually and pressing directly down on them rather than at an angle. So the calculator still works fine. I’m just used to the ease of typing of the other calculators I have used frequently, a TI-84 and a TI-89, which are much more forgiving and can be typed on much faster and more accurately. And obviously, even one missed key can create a big problem when doing a math problem. However, that’s the only reason I’m deducting a start from this review.I’m quite pleased with everything else about this calculator. I often have to hold the calculator in my hand to ensure I’m entering the numbers correctly. The buttons are also a bit flimsy but its more of an aesthetic than functional issue. I was using a TI previously but found out I was getting 1 in 10 questions wrong on my exams because the keys weren’t always registering the number in the calculation. Turns out it’s a bunch of small things that us math majors really appreciate; lines over repeating decimals, gcd and lcm, remainders (for modular arithmetic), and a bit more memory than its predecessor. BUT IT’S PREDECESSOR WAS ALREADY AMAZING, so basically this calculator is amazing plus.For you calculus students out there that need a scientific calculator for exams: this calculator solves systems of linear equations (with up to 3 variables), quadratics, cubics, does matrix inversion, addition/subtraction and multiplication, gives exact answers (sin(pi/4)=sqrt(2)/2), and is just in general a super easy calculator to use. I’ve been pimping Casio out for a while now, but seriously, for $15 this is the BEST investment you can make in your math education.UPDATE 11/12/2017This calculator still works like a dream and beats everything on the market. As a math instructor I’ve seen probably every scientific calculator out there- certainly all of the TI’s- and not one of them even comes close. One of the most important features I didn’t mention in my original review was its ability to evaluate definite integrals and also derivatives at a point! It’s the same calculator the teacher lends out. Works great. After six months of hauling it around & middle school use, my son came home to share he couldn’t turn it on. Any combination of chaos at school could have traumatized it, but I called TI’s customer service who helped me reset it. They suggested the reset button on the back be pushed with a paperclip to clear the memory & restart it. Worked fabulously and like new again, ready for another daily beating & hauling around. If that didn’t work, the next step or alternative was the On & Clear button at the same time. Didn’t have to go there:) . I bought this, but I then gave it away soon after. The deal breaker for me was that the trig functions (sine, cosine, and tangent) are not quickly accessible. HP 35S 35S Programmable Scientific Calculator, 14-Digit LCD Top Reviews Meets expectations but really bummed that they limited the stack to 3 deep. My 48 GX really spoiled me, but had to have this one for PE exam. Would warn everyone that there is no warning that you have exceeded the stack. It will give you an answer but t will be wrong. This is likely not an issue unless you have been accustomed to the much larger stack on the 48 GX. . This is my fourth HP RPN pocket calculator. My first was an HP 45, purchased in 1974 (and cost more than I paid for my first car). Not programmable, but wildly useful. It still kinda works, but only if plugged into the wall. My second was an HP11C, purchased in 1980. A fabulous calculator, in all ways! It still works, but I have to pay attention to each keystroke as sometimes the buttons fail to register. Its integration function/algorithm, however, beautifully replicates analytical solutions. Not so my third calculator, an HP 32SII, purchased in 2001. Its integration function was faster and usually ~10% less accurate than the HP 11C (i.e., doing the same integrals and comparing to the analytical solution). The HP 32SII has failed completely, specifically the buttons: they simply do not work anymore, period. So it has been replaced with this new HP 35 S. The integration algorithm is surprisingly bad! Breaking up an integral into smaller and smaller parts (and then summing the solutions) gets closer and closer to the analytical solution, but what a pain! The other problem is it’s an RPN/Algebraic hybrid (i.e., all but a sellout, philosophically). The owners manual only presents programming examples in algebraic. This wouldn’t be a problem if the RPN programming protocol was left unchanged from previous HP devices, but, of course, it wasn’t and I’ve had to screw around figuring out the changes to get my programs to be implemented, as the manual is of little use. I’m glad that I still have my 11C, but after 39 years of service (more lightly for the past ten, but, hey!), it will fail completely sooner or later. So, to HP: bring back the 11C, manufactured at least as well as the original! In the meanwhile, I’ll slog along with this 35S, wondering about the quality of my integration results . . Typical HP genius- Easy to get functional on, but you need two PhD’s to understand all the functions. Never mind, it can do the things you understand, also.RPN is a different syntax that allows no confusion around which thing comes first in operations, or is paired with what. No parentheses. Yet you can enter the most complex expressions right
into it, get your answer, and poke on and on, nesting equations, and appending the answer to the ongoing result value, many layers deep. You should really learn this. You’ll never go back. . If you don’t know how to program a calculator for repetive calculations, begin on this machine. If you don’t know RPN calculator operations which are far faster and less error prone than “=”, buy this and learn. You will be thrilled. The LCD display reads nicely in direct sunlight as well as at a dim desk, any angle. The calculator will not run a remote printer so far as I know. It is very fast for chained entry. Just keep an eye on what you are doing.Key printing should be OK for a few years if your hands are clean. These don’t look like molded-in or laser-etched markings so beware lifetime if your hands are abrasive. Passes anti-functions tests. Very nifty units conversion on keyboard. The keys themselves, and their distance from each other, are comfortable (I personally do not like the sculpted Chiclet-like keys that butt up against each other; for me at least, those keys tend to encourage physical slips that result in incorrect entries). The Chiclet keys also seem to have a short distance of travel; in other words, you do not and cannot press the keys very far. Some might find that an advantage – I like to be able to depress the key for what feels like a 1/4 or so. This gives feedback to your brain when you are entering data (particularly in a hurry) that you have actually made the entry. This unit provides that feedback.My much-missed older printing calculator described above cost several times the price of this one, and I would gladly pay that price again for the heft and quality of the unit, but no one seems to offer anything similar.I was going to rate this unit 4 stars, because it is not perfect. But is does all the basic functions well – and then some.
