Each year, Hollywood Insiders, also known as members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, celebrate the best films of the year. The Oscars will take place this coming Sunday, March 27, 2022, and you’ll get a lot more enjoyment out of the show if you see at least a few of the nominated films.

The action takes place in Northern Ireland in 1969. tells the story of nine-year-old Buddy and his family during the Troubles. Kenneth Branagh made history with seven Oscar nominations, including Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Judi Dench was nominated for Best Supporting Actress and Ciarán Hinds for Best Supporting Actor.

In this movie, Emilia Jones plays Ruby, a CODA (child of deaf adults). Ruby wants to pursue her interest in music and faces difficult decisions. The film also stars Troy Kotzur, the first deaf actor ever to be nominated for Best Supporting Actor or even an Oscar.

Don’t Look Up is a controversial and cautionary tale about a world that doesn’t care too much about impending doom. This satire, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio, is by Adam McKay, who also directed the film The Big Sink. Although Meryl Streep was not nominated for any Academy Awards this year, she appears in Don’t Look Up as the President of the United States.

Based on the story of love and loss by popular Japanese writer Haruki Murakami, the film was also nominated for Best Director (Ryusuke Hamaguchi), Best International Feature Film, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Based on Frank Herbert’s beloved sci-fi novel, Dune was originally released in theaters and simultaneously on HBO Max. In addition to being nominated for Best Picture, Dune was also nominated for Oscars in the following categories: Costume Design, Cinematography, Adapted Screenplay, Film Editing, Original Music, Production Designer”, “Costume Design”, “Makeup and Hair”, “Sound” and “Best Visual”. Paul Thomas Anderson, Best Director nominee, presents Licorice Pizza, a coming-of-age story set in the San Fernando Valley in the 1970s. Bradley Cooper, Tom Waits, and Sean Penn show up, but the real star is newcomer Alana Heim. Anderson wrote the role with Chaim in mind. She stars alongside Cooper Hoffman, son of the late actor Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Nightmare Alley

This psychological thriller has been in development since 2017. It is based on the 1946 novel by William Lindsey Gresham and is the first Guillermo del Toro film not to have supernatural elements. The film is very dark and del Toro said he hopes for an R rating. “Big R. Double R!” The film was also nominated for Best Costume Design, Cinematography, and Adapted Screenplay.

The Power of the Dog

The title of this film about a rancher intoxicated with power comes from the 21st Psalm. “Deliver my soul from the sword; my dear from the power of the dog. Jane Campion was the first woman to be nominated for Best Director twice (first for The Piano in 1993). Based on the 1967 novel by Thomas Savage, the film received twelve Oscar nominations, including Best Cinematography and Acting nominations for Benedict Cumberbatch (Best Actor), Kirsten Dunst (Best Supporting Actress), Jesse Plemons (Best Supporting Actor), and Cody Smith-McPhee (Best Supporting Actor).

West Side Story

This remake of the classic musical about forbidden love earned Steven Spielberg a Best Director nomination. Ariana DeBoz plays the role of Maria. Interestingly, DeBose’s first television appearance was on So You Think You Can Dance. She has since appeared in several Broadway musicals, including Hamilton. The film was also nominated for Best Costume Design and Best Cinematography.
