1 – One Huge Jumbo Calculator With Oversize Display

I had one of these for many years and it finally bit the dust. I ordered this one and love it. It even talks to me!!! I am still learning all of the ‘things’ it can do. Fascinating. .
Well, I received the calc and one corner of the body was broken – the top part was separated from the top and would not snap back together wit the bottom and the screw that is on the backside was stripped out so it would not hold it together either. Yet, the box it came in was not damaged and neither was the box it was shipped in. The calc works, so I guess that’s a plus. This was a gift for a senior citizen. .
The product I received did not work, the display showed random and scrambled LCD gibberish. The calculator was cheaply made with a thin plastic case and was poorly packaged for shipping, hence it arrived DOA. .
My 12 year old bought another pricier version of this at a “gift shop”. It promptly broke within a couple of weeks of use at school so we replaced it with this one. She likes her original one better (don’t ask me why I think it was the novelty), but this one seems to work fine. So far so good. I did emphasize that she use the original packing when carting it to or from school and she actually listened! Perhaps that helped in its lifespan:) .

We ordered this calculator for our son’s birthday. When it arrived, it was immediately clear that the display was broken as the electronic ink was permanently shown on the display at the right hand side. I returned the calculator without opening the package and requested a replacement. The seller quickly sent a replacement with no issue. The new calculator appeared to be in normal condition when it arrived. We gave it to our kid yesterday for his birthday, but after opening the package, he quickly discovered that the buttons don’t work properly all the time. He has to really press hard on the buttons to get anything to register, and strangely, regardless of the button he pushes, the display only registers 7s.I took the battery out, then put it back in after a minute. It seemed to work properly for a few minutes, but then started having the same issues.Unfortunately we ordered the replacement early enough before his birthday that the 30-day return window has passed now that his birthday arrived. It’s too late to return, and I’m hesitant to purchase another because of issues with the first two.The calculator looks nice and has big buttons. It looks like it should work well! .
I bought this calculator after I spilled coffee over the one I always have on my home office desk. I needed a basic calculator – no fancy bells or whistles, just reliable, easy to read calculations. I’ve been using it daily for over a week and find nothing to complain about: operates on dual power (solar/battery) so is bright and clear even when stored in a drawer for a while; easy to read display, large number/function keys that are easy to locate and read, very reasonable price, – the cute color doesn’t hurt either. .
I bought this Avalon calculator for its large size, its shape (I like that the display is angled upward a little), and for the selection of fun colors. I chose green. It’s solar-powered but also comes with a battery for use in darker environments. Love the jumbo display, buttons, and the huge ‘equals’ button – the one button you use all the time. However my only dislike is that the buttons have a wobbly, imprecise feel, and you sometimes have to press a bit harder to get the button to respond. My similarly-priced Sharp Elsi Mate calculator has such positive and light button feel that makes it a pure joy to use in comparison to this one. But it doesn’t have the fun factor of this one. .
I’m disappointed to have a negative review for this calculator, because I like the color and big buttons — it’s great except for one flaw that ruins it for me. The tilt of the display is either too much or not enough (not sure which), and as a result I literally cannot see the numbers when the calculator is flat on my desk, which means I have to hold it to do calculations. If I’m going to do that, I might as well use my iPhone. Very disappointed to have a design flaw ruin an otherwise great calculator.I’ve attached a photo to show what the display normally looks like for me — unless the calculator is directly underneath my nose, this is what it looks like. .
