Do you turn on theater mode when you go to the cinema, or silent mode when you go to church? Do you change your Apple Watch face at the start or end of your workday? You may not realize it, but you can automate these actions on your Apple Watch.

Using the iOS Shortcuts app, you can set up automations for your Apple Watch based on your location or time of day. Then you will never have to remember to turn on another mode or change your face. Just look down and it’s already done!
Here are some useful Apple Watch keyboard shortcuts that take your wearables to the next level.
Set Up Apple Watch Shortcuts on iPhone
Because every automation we’ll explain uses the same initial steps, that’s where we’ll start.
Open the Shortcuts app on iPhone and select the Automation tab at the bottom.Tap the plus sign in the upper right corner to add a new automation.Select Create Personal Automation.
From here, you will follow different steps depending on the automation you want to add. Let’s see how to set up different ways to automate shortcuts based on location or time.
Note. To use shortcuts, you need iOS 13 or later on iPhone and watchOS 7 or later on Apple Watch.
1. Enable a Quiet Mode When You Arrive
If you’ve ever forgotten to turn on theater mode at the cinema or mute at the doctor’s office, you’ll appreciate this automation. You can enable one of these silent modes to turn off alerts when you arrive at a location.
Follow the initial steps above to add a new automation.On the New Automation screen with a list of conditions, select Arrival. Next to Location, click Select to search for a location. Select a location from the results and click Done.
You can choose any time or enter a time range. Click Next.Select Add Action at the top of the next screen.Type Watch in the search box at the top and select Watch when it appears at the top of the results.
Select either Set Theater Mode or Set Silent Mode. At the top of the Actions screen, make sure Turn On [Mode] is checked at the top. If not, tap the words highlighted in blue to select these options.Click Next to confirm the automation and Done to finish.
The next time you visit a place where you want your watch to be quiet, it will automatically turn on Theater or Silent mode.
2. Disable a Quiet Mode When You Leave
Perhaps your situation is reversed. You remember to turn on theater or silent mode when you arrive, but forget to turn it off when you leave. This can be automated too.
Follow the initial steps at the beginning to add a new automation.On the “New Automation” screen with a list of conditions, select “Exit”. Next to “Location”, click “Select” to find the location. Select a location from the results and click Done.
You can choose any time or enter a time range. Click Next.Select “Add Action” at the top of the next screen.Type “Look” in the search box and select “Look” at the top of the results.
Select Set Theater Mode or Set Silent Mode.At the top of the Actions screen, tap the blue On. and select “Off” in the pop-up list below. Confirm that the action now displays Turn [Mode] Off.Click Next to confirm the automation and Finish to finish.
With this automation, Theater or Silent mode will automatically turn off when you leave, and you will start receiving notifications again.
3. Change Your Watch Face When You Arrive or Leave
Apple Watch automation goes beyond enabling or disabling silent modes. You can also change your watch face. This is handy if you use a particular watch face at work, the gym, or school and change it back when you go home.
Follow the initial steps at the beginning to add a new automation.On the New Automation screen, select either Arrive or Depart depending on your preference. Next to Location, click Select to find the location. Select a location from the results and click Done.
You can choose any time or enter a time range. In the screenshot below, we have used start and end times for our fitness workout.Click Next.Select Add Activity at the top of the next screen.Type Watch in the search box . and select See Above.
Select Set Watch Face.At the top of the Actions screen, tap the blue watch face and select the watch face you want from the list.
Confirm that the action now displays “Set active watch face to [of your choice].”Tap Next to confirm, optionally enable “Ask before launch” and “Finish” to finish.< /ol>
With this setting, your Apple Watch watch face will automatically change when you arrive at or leave the specified location.
4. Set Your Screen to Always On When Commuting
When you drive to work, you can set the Always On watch face. This allows you to look at the screen without lifting your wrist or touching the watch while driving.
Follow the initial steps at the beginning to add a new automation.On the New Automation screen, select Before Commuting.Select To Work and select the time you want to use, starting with the predicted time. up to one hour.Click Next.Select Add Action at the top of the next screen.
Type “Watch” in the search box and select “Watch” at the top. Select Always On. Make sure the top is set to Always On. If not, tap the words highlighted in blue to select these options.Tap Next to confirm and Finish to complete.
Now, when you go on your morning commute, your watch display will always be on so you can easily see.
5. Turn on Schooltime During Class
Along with the options to change Apple Watch behavior based on location, you can do so based on the time of day.
Because students of all ages attend classes virtually rather than in a physical location, including school time is convenient. This is especially useful if you haven’t set up a school timetable on a student’s (or your own!) watch.
Follow the initial steps at the beginning to add a new automation.On the New Automation screen, select Time of Day.Select Time of Day and select a time.In the Repeat section, select “Weekly”. and select the days of the week. Blue indicates your choice. This allows you to turn on School Time at specific times, on specific days, every week.Click Next.Select Add Action at the top of the next screen.
Type ‘View’ in the search field and select ‘View’.Select ‘Set School Time’.Make sure ‘Enable School Time’ is checked at the top. If not, tap the blue highlighted words to select these options.Tap Next to confirm, turn on the Ask Before Start option if necessary, and Done to finish.
You’ll never have to remember to use Schooltime once the class starts using this automation! When class is over, rotate the Digital Crown to turn off school time.
