Automate Your Mac and iOS Devices with IFTTT.

Mac users are always trying to increase their productivity by using the built-in Automator to automate repetitive tasks on their Mac or by using third-party utilities from the Mac App Store.

In addition, iOS 12 will provide a build capability in the new Shortcuts app. However, besides any particular mobile device or computer, there are many other possibilities. In addition to these tools, I also like to use If This Then That (IFTTT), a mobile and web automation tool.

IFTTT

According to the creators of IFTTT, “an applet connects two or more applications or devices together. It allows you to do things that these applications or devices cannot do on their own. ”

You can read more information about applets here: https://help.ifttt.com/hc/en-us/articles/115010361348-What-is-an-Applet-

Examples

Here are some examples to illustrate the usefulness of this tool. Ever wanted to be notified of your favorite team’s final score? Or email in the morning if it rains in the weather forecast?

Are you a space junkie who would like to know every time the ISS (International Space Station) passes overhead, or when an astronaut goes into space, or when NASA publishes a new space image?

Or are you longing for an easy way to post to your Facebook page whenever you upload a new blog post? Or is it easy to post your Instagram photos to your Twitter account?

Are you a music lover and want to receive a daily live concert digest at your favorite location, or add new snippets of the artist you follow to your Spotify playlist and receive an email?

These and many other “applets” are available for use.

What’s especially cool about IFTTT is that it works across all platforms and devices.

Configuring the applet

Set up an applet

Let’s tweak the IFTTT applet to see how it works.

First go to https://ifttt.com/ and create an account. For added security, we strongly recommend that you enable two-step protection for your IFTTT account.

Please note that in order to customize applets using your Twitter or Facebook account, etc., first authorize IFTTT to access those accounts.

This is another reason to use 2-Step Verification as just discussed. Now click “Discover” and marvel at the applets created by users from all over the world.

To begin with, let’s choose the first one mentioned above: receive an alert with the final score of your favorite team. Here is an applet to get a Facebook message with the result from your favorite team. https://ifttt.com/applets/rbJjfhD3-get-the-final-score-for-your-favorite-team

Select this applet, then set the Off switch to On. Assuming you’ve allowed IFTTT to send you Facebook messages, you’ll see a drop-down menu to select a sport and then a team.

Now select a sport, then a team and click “Save”.

This applet is now included. I got a Facebook post with a recent result!

Mobile Apps

Mobile applications

IFTTT has mobile apps for iOS and Android – use the app on your iPhone or iPad to customize and receive notifications about the applets you’ve enabled. Next, let’s configure the applet to alert us via an iOS notification from the ESPN app: https://ifttt.com/applets/196940p-receive-a-notification-with-the-final-scores-for-your-favorite -command /.

Open the IFTTT app on your iPhone or iPad and sign in if you need to connect the app to your IFTTT account. Now find the “Final Score” and you will see the ESPN applet. Get notified with the final results of your favorite team.

Select it and you will see this applet uses ESPN mobile app and iOS notifications. Press the big red On button, Select the sport, team again and press Save.

You will see a message that the applet is enabled! and then offer more applets. Now, the next time your team plays, you will receive a notification of the result!

Let us know which applets you started using! Enjoy!
