Typically, your network router assigns a dynamic IP address to your devices, including Windows 10 and 11 computers. If you need a static IP address for your PC, you either need to configure your router or change the settings option on your computer.

The good thing is there are several ways to assign a static IP address to your Windows PC. Whichever is best for you, you can choose a method and continue to get a fixed IP address for your computer.

Why Use a Static IP Address?

There are many reasons why you need a static IP address. You may be using a dial-up connection to connect to your computer. In this case, having a permanent IP address makes it easier to establish a remote connection.

Likewise, if you are using your computer to share files on the network, a static IP address ensures that other devices on your network can connect to your computer without any configuration changes.

Assign a Static IP to Your Windows 11/10 PC Using Your Router

One way to get a static IP address for your PC is to configure your router to allocate a specified IP address to your PC. Most routers offer this option, but the way you configure your router is different for each router model.

Typically, you should follow these steps to set up a static IP address for your PC on your network router.

Find the MAC address of your network adapter

In order for the router to identify your computer and assign it a specific IP address, you need to enter the unique MAC address of your network adapter (which is on your PC) on the router’s settings page.

So let’s first find out the MAC address of your network adapter:

Open the Start menu, search for Command Prompt and select Command Prompt from the search results.

The command line will display various values on your screen. Find your network adapter here and look for the value in the Physical Address field. This is the unique MAC address of your adapter. Make a note of this address.

Configure your router to assign a static IP address to your computer

Now you need to access your router’s settings page. For most routers, this can be done by entering the IP address 192.168.1.1 into a web browser on your computer. If that doesn’t work for you, refer to your router’s manual for how to access the settings page.

Launch a web browser on your computer, enter the following IP address and press Enter.

192.168.1.1

You will see the login page for your router. Enter your router username and password and proceed. For most routers, you can use admin in both the username and password fields.

Select “Network Settings” at the top of the router’s settings page.

Enter the unique MAC address of your network adapter in the MAC address field. Then select “Add” and then click “OK” at the bottom of the page. Restart your router.

When your Windows 11 or 10 computer connects to your router, your router will assign the specified IP address to your computer. This will happen every time you connect your computer to the router.

Assign a Static IP to Your Windows 10 PC

If you don’t want to configure your router settings, another way to assign a static IP address to your Windows 10 computer is to use the Windows Settings app. In this application, you can configure the IP parameters so that your computer always gets a unique static IP.

However, there is a small problem with this method. If your router has already assigned the IP address that you want to use for your PC to another device, you will have problems connecting your PC to the router.

To work around this, try using an IP address outside of the normal IP addresses assigned by your router. For example, if your router usually exposes IP addresses, say up to 192.168.1.10, then use 192.168.1.20 as the static IP for your PC.

To continue with this method:

Open the Settings app on your computer by pressing the Windows + I keys at the same time. Select Network & Internet from the Settings window.
