9 Ways To Make Windows 10 Faster. How to make windows 10 faster 2021.
Modern operating systems use more resources than ever before. This is usually not a problem as platforms such as Windows, macOS, and most Linux distributions are optimized for modern computing hardware.
However, sometimes you will find that Windows is slower than you remember. There can be many reasons for this, and these 9 ways to make Windows 10 faster should solve most of them.
Turn Your Computer Off
Before changing the settings of your computer, it is worth considering how much time has passed since the last shutdown of your computer. You can leave your computer in sleep or hibernation mode for a short time, but you will need to shut down or restart your computer from time to time.
Restarting allows Windows to install important updates, reset Wi-Fi and other peripherals, and clear memory cache. Turning off your computer overnight may be even more advisable as it may better indicate any problems with the new hardware.
Sometimes the computer works fine when first started, and then it may slow down. This is usually a symptom of a cooling problem and can be resolved with a new fan or reapplying thermal paste to the central processing unit (CPU).
Power Settings
Windows 10 comes with power settings designed to get the most out of your hardware and battery. A side effect of this rule is less power allocated to the computer hardware, which affects performance.
Windows 10 defaults to a balanced power plan, which you can change by clicking the battery icon in the bottom right corner. Move the slider to the right to get the best performance out of your computer.
This is especially important for resource-intensive tasks such as video editing or gaming.
Disable Windows 10 Visual Effects
Windows 10 is the most aesthetic iteration of Windows to date, and it’s easy to customize. The default Windows 10 visuals include animations, shadows, and transparency.
As good as they look, all visuals compete for CPU and memory attention. Disabling them makes the system more efficient:
Press the Windows key and type sysdm.cpl to open the system properties. Select a performance section Select the Configure check box for best performance.
This window gives you precise control over what effects you see, but disabling them all is the best way to ensure maximum speed. To turn off transparency, press the Windows key and type “Colors.” Clear the Transparency Effects check box.
Delete Windows 10 Bloatware
Anything on your computer that you don’t use regularly is malware. This could be software that you have installed and no longer use, or programs that come with Windows 10. The first step to removing malware is to remove software that you no longer need.
Press the Windows key and type Add or Remove Programs. Find software in the list that you no longer need (you can filter and search using the dialog boxes provided) Click each application, then click Uninstall to uninstall it from your system.
This step will get rid of all the programs you no longer need, but some of the apps that come with Windows are more difficult to uninstall.
If you want to get your hands dirty, you can use Sycnex’s Windows10Debloater, a PowerShell script designed to automate the malware removal process. You can find full instructions on the GitHub page for the project.
Note. Make sure you read the instructions carefully. Some Windows 10 apps can be difficult to get back after cleaning.
Clean Out Your Startup Folder
Many programs are added to your computer’s startup routine as part of the installation process. Unnecessary background software is not only very tricky, but also requires valuable resources.
If you don’t need any software running in the background, remove it from startup by pressing the Windows key and typing Startup Apps. You will see a list of programs that automatically start with your computer. Uncheck the boxes next to the ones you don’t need.
Limit Backup Services
Backup services are a great idea, and storing important files in the cloud or on local network storage can save a lot of headaches in the long run. Online services like Dropbox and Google Drive automatically back up specific folders from your computer.
It’s important to control when this happens, as syncing large files and folders can slow down both your computer and your internet connection. If you need your computer to run at full capacity, temporarily suspend all sync services.
Make Hard Drive Space
With so many digital media and games that typically require up to 100GB of storage space, running out of space is inevitable. Unfortunately, this is not very good for maintaining the speed of your computer. Looping through a huge number of files can be an expensive process, and if your system drive is nearly full, your computer will become slower and unstable.
Delete files and games you are not using to keep your system drive as light as possible. If possible, an external hard drive or solid state drive is a great way to store large files.
Defrag
If your computer uses a traditional hard drive rather than an SSD, defragmentation can make a big difference in performance. To start defragmenting, press the Windows key and type “Defragment and Optimize Drives.” Click “Optimize” to get started.
Note that you don’t need to defragment SSD drives, but don’t worry if you don’t know which drive you have – Windows 10 will automatically detect your drive type.
Turn Off Indexing

Search indexing is designed to speed up your computer by analyzing and categorizing data to make it easier to find. Ironically, most modern systems don’t need this feature and actually slows down the system.
We have a detailed guide to indexing and why you want to remove it, but in short:
Press the Windows key and enter Indexing Options. Select Modify> Show All Locations Select each item in the Summary of Selected Locations list. Uncheck the boxes in the Change Selected Location list above.
No modern SSD computer requires indexing to be enabled. If you are not sure if your computer has a solid state drive, you can turn off indexing to check if the speed has changed. If that doesn’t work (or slows down), you can re-enable indexing by following the above process in reverse.
The Need For Speed
These 9 tips will significantly affect the speed of your computer. If you want to go further, clean your computer’s registry.
There are also tools that you can use to speed up your computer. Treat them with caution, as popular options like CCleaner may not be credible.
