9 Ways to Fixing Safari Not Working on Mac?.
Apple is working hard to improve and optimize Safari on Mac, and you can see it. The browser loads websites very quickly use less power compared to Chrome and Firefox, and syncs data to iPhone and iPad like a charm. However, despite this, Safari is not without its problems.
We talked a while ago about fixing slow page loading issues in Safari. This time, we will share what you should do to fix this when Safari is not working on your Mac; whether it freezes, crashes, or doesn’t open at all.

1. Force Quit Safari
If Safari just freezes and doesn’t work at all on your Mac, try force quitting it. To do this, open the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of your screen and select Force Quit. Or press Command + Option + Escape. In the Force Quit Applications window that appears, select Safari and select Force Quit.
Then wait a few seconds and restart your browser. If it keeps freezing or freezing when you open it, move on to the next fix.
2. Restart Mac
Restarting your Mac can fix most problems in both native and third-party programs. Try it if you haven’t rebooted in a while.
3. Update Safari
Running Safari with the latest updates installed is the best way to prevent problems due to known software bugs. The standard Mac browser is integrated into macOS, so you need to update the operating system itself if you want to update Safari.
To do this, open the Apple menu, choose System Preferences, and choose Software Update. If you see an update in the list, select Update Now.
4. Clear Browser Cache
Outdated browser cache is another reason Safari may not function correctly on your Mac. Try to clear it.
1. Open Safari. Then choose Safari from the menu bar and choose the Preferences option.
2. Click the Advanced tab and select the Show development menu in the menu bar check box.
3. A new item “Development” should appear in the menu bar. Open it and select “Clear Caches”.
This should remove the Safari cache. Restart your browser and check if it works correctly.
Note. You can go back to the Safari preferences panel and disable the Develop menu if you like.
5. Disable Extensions
Extensions help improve the Safari experience. But unoptimized or outdated extensions can also cause freezes and random crashes.
To confirm, start by disabling all extensions. Select Safari from the menu bar, select Safari Extensions, and uncheck the boxes next to each active extension.
Tip: If you haven’t hidden the Develop menu before, you can open it and select Disable Extensions to instantly deactivate all extensions.
Close and restart Safari. If the browser starts working correctly, re-enable the extensions one at a time. This should allow you to identify the extension that is causing the problem. Then you can remove the extension from Safari. Or, you can find an update for the extension in the Mac App Store that might help fix this.
6. Delete Safari Preferences
Deleting the file that stores your Safari preferences can fix problems caused by incorrectly configured browser preferences. However, before starting, either close or force quit Safari.
1. Open Finder. Then press Command + Shift + G to open the Go To Folder box.
2. Copy and paste the following path and select Go:
~ / Library / Containers / com.apple.Safari / Data / Library / Preferences
3. Right-click the com.apple.Safari.plist file and select Move to Trash. Safari will automatically recreate the file later, so don’t worry.
Reboot your Mac. Then open Safari and check if it works fine. If you want to change your browser settings (home page, new tabs, default search engine, etc.), go to the Safari preferences panel.
7. Enter Safe Mode
If you’re having trouble opening Safari to clear your cache or disable any active extensions, try booting into Safe Mode.
Start by shutting down your Mac. Then wait at least 10 seconds and turn it on by holding down any of the Shift keys.
After loading in Safe Mode, open Safari. It should start up without issue. Fix fixes 4-6 again and restart your Mac normally.
In some cases, simply entering and exiting Safe Mode can fix Safari as well as any other programs that are not working as expected.
8. Clear Mac Cache
Have you tried deleting the Safari browser cache before? It’s time to clear your Mac’s app and system cache. This can fix problems in Safari caused by outdated or corrupted data in related applications and operating systems.
9. Check Startup Disk
If none of the above fixes worked, it’s worth checking and fixing the errors on your Mac’s startup drive. macOS has Disk Utility that can help with this. But first, you have to restart your Mac in recovery mode.
1. Shut down your Mac. Then turn it on by holding down the Command and R keys. Release them as soon as you see the Apple logo. Shortly thereafter, you will enter recovery mode.
2. Select the “Disk Utility” option and click “Continue”.
3. Select Macintosh HD on the left side of the Disk Utility window. Then select the icon that says First Aid.
4. Select “Run” to search for disk errors. Disk Utility will try to fix anything it encounters.
5. Select “Finish”.
6. Select Macintosh HD – Data on the left side of the Disk Utility pane and repeat steps 3-5.
7. Open the Apple menu in the upper left corner of your screen and select Restart.
After a normal Mac restarts, open Safari and check if Boot Disk Repair helped.
Start Browsing Again
Hopefully, you’ve fixed Safari about halfway through. If you had to complete all the fixes but nothing worked, you can reinstall macOS. There may be a deep problem preventing Safari from working properly, which only a fresh installation of the operating system can fix. Or, you can try switching to an alternative browser like Chrome or Firefox, at least temporarily.
