6 Reasons AllTrails Pro Is Worth It for Avid Hikers – Opera News.
Anyone who has been hiking long enough knows how popular the AllTrails hiking app is in the travel community. There are many reasons for this.
AllTrails helps you find the best routes nearby, view overviews of those routes, and track your location while hiking. As useful as the free version is, there are many benefits to buying the Pro version.
This article will take you through everything you get when you pay for AllTrails Pro so you can decide if it’s worth it.
Note. It costs $ 29.99 a year to upgrade to AllTrails Pro, or you can pay $ 99.99 for a lifetime subscription.
1. Download Offline Maps
One of the main reasons most outdoor enthusiasts buy AllTrails Pro is offline map downloads.
This means you can explore routes that are far beyond any cellular network. All you have to do is click on the little down arrow icon next to the map name to download the route map to your phone.
This will open the Map Layers window where you can select the style of the map you want to load. Then, when you open AllTrails, it will access your local copy of the map and display your location as a blue dot.
Until your phone battery runs out, you will never get lost again!
2. Access to AllTrails Navigator
If you have an AllTrails Pro, you will see a small arrow icon with the word “Guidance” under the trail name on the trail card.
A handy feature called the navigator allows you to track your activity while walking.
When you select the Navigator app, a map appears very similar to Google Maps. You will have the opportunity to indicate what you plan to do on the trail, such as hiking, mountain biking, running, and more.
After that, a green Start button will appear under the map. Select this to start your activity and AllTrails will track time, distance, climb and more depending on which activity you choose.
You can save these activities to your account and review them later.
3. Use Lifeline to Keep Yourself Safe
Heading out into the wilderness is usually pretty safe, but you never know what might go wrong in the wild. The best practice among avid travelers is to always keep your family or closest friends up to date when you go off the beaten path. This is especially true if you go far from the network.
To start Lifeline, click the small gray icon to the right of the Start button in your navigator.
The “Bridge of Life” form will open with all your locations and plans (for example, when you started and plan to end the hike).
Use the Edit links to add your safety contacts (family and friends email addresses). Then, in the form below, you can fill out the message you want to send to your safety contacts so they know why your AllTrails app is sending them information about your outdoor adventures.
Important Lifeline Features:
- Send status updates with the click of a button so your contacts can follow your progress.
- Navigator will notify you immediately if you start moving. accidentally lost their way.
- The life line will automatically alert your interlocutors if you do not finish your activity by the time it should have ended. It even sends them your last known location.
If you ever get lost, even if your phone is running low, knowing your last known location will greatly increase the likelihood that search and rescue teams can find you.
4. See Real-Time Details About Trail Conditions
There are many reasons why you might want to abandon a planned hike. If a storm is coming, the AllTrails Weather overlay will let you see it before it arrives. If the day is very sweltering and local air quality or pollution levels are poor, AllTrails offers an Air Quality or Light Pollution overlay so you can see if the air is clean enough for hiking.
There is even a pollen overlay so you can see if trail conditions might exacerbate your allergies too much.
Overlays are simply map layers that will appear on top of your route map. To enable any of these overlays in AllTrails Pro, simply touch the two overlapping rectangles icon on the right side of the route map.
Choose any of the overlays (Pro or not Pro) that you want to appear on your map. Then, when you hit the back arrow at the top of the screen, you will see these map layers appear on your route map.
You can remove any overlays by clicking the same icon and then clicking the selected overlay and deselecting it.
5. Print Paper Versions of Your Maps
You can select the Print / PDF link under the track title to print a paper copy of the track on any track.
Before printing, you can set the scale, orientation, grid lines, print layout, and the type of map you want to print.
You can also access the AllTrails Pro print function by viewing the route map itself. Just select the tiny printer icon in the top right corner of the card.
You can send the printout to your printer for paper copy, or save it as PDF. If you save the PDF, you can transfer the file to your phone to create a trail backup if the AllTrails app crashes. Or you can send a PDF to a friend so you both can carry a copy of the map with you as you walk the trail.
6. No More Ads
Advertising in the free version of AllTrails can be annoying. Therefore, you will be glad to know that after upgrading to AllTrails Pro, all ads will disappear.
You don’t have to worry about ads appearing while you try to find a new hiking trail or browse the map.
It’s nice to work without ads when using the app. This allows you to focus on what you care about without being distracted.
Best of all, 1% of each subscription goes to non-profit organizations dedicated to protecting the planet.
Should You Upgrade to AllTrails Pro?
Whether you are upgrading to AllTrails Pro is a personal decision. However, if you spend a lot of time traveling in remote locations with poor cellular signal, the AllTrails Pro version will pay off. You can travel anywhere without worrying about whether you can access your maps or route information.
Plus, with Navigator to track your activity and Lifeline to keep you safe away from home, there are more than enough reasons to upgrade.
If you hike or spend time outdoors only occasionally, the Pro version may not be worth it. But if you’re an avid adventurer, you can’t go wrong with this little investment.
