Zoom is a popular video conferencing and meeting app. If you’re participating in a Zoom meeting, it can be helpful to mute your audio so you don’t accidentally interrupt the speaker, especially if the meeting is large, such as a webinar.

While you can only mute other participants if you are the host or co-host of the meeting, Zoom always allows you to mute yourself. In this article, we’ll walk you through how you can mute your audio or microphone in Zoom on your PC, Mac, iPad, or mobile device.

1. Mute Yourself With the Zoom Toolbar

The Zoom toolbar makes it easy to mute the sound, and the process is pretty much the same for both the PC and the mobile app.

To mute your audio in Zoom:

When you are in a Zoom call, click or tap on the mute button in the bottom left corner. The mute button should change to a crossed out microphone icon and say “Unmute”. This on button means your microphone is muted.

If the toolbar is not visible and you are using Windows or Mac, all you have to do is hover your mouse over the Zoom window. If you are using Android or iPhone, just touch the screen and it will appear.

Note. The loudspeaker icon in the top left corner of the screen simply turns down the sound so you can’t hear anything. It doesn’t turn on the sound.

2. Mute Yourself Using Zoom Keyboard Shortcuts

There are some useful Zoom keyboard shortcuts on both Mac and PC. To mute your sound on Windows 10, press Alt + A. To mute your sound on a Mac, press Shift + Command + A.

There are many other useful keyboard shortcuts and tips for using Zoom, including keyboard shortcuts that mute participants (instead of clicking Mute All or Unmute All in the participant’s window).

3. Enable Auto-Mute When Joining Zoom Meetings

Some people choose to join a meeting with the sound muted so as not to cause unnecessary interruptions when joining. Luckily, Zoom has a special setting that allows users to do just that.

To have your audio muted every time you join a Zoom meeting on PC or Mac:

Open the Zoom desktop app. Select the settings gear icon in the upper right corner of the zoom window.

Click “Audio” on the left panel.

Scroll down and check the “Mute my microphone when joining a meeting” box.

To have your sound muted when you join a meeting on your phone:

Open the Zoom app. Tap “Settings” at the bottom of the screen.

Tap Meeting.

Turn on Mute.

4. Disable Your Microphone

Another option that will ensure your Zoom audio is muted is to mute your microphone directly through the system settings. This option is only available on PC or Mac. If you’re using Android or iOS, you can prevent the Zoom app from accessing your microphone when the pop-up appears.

To disable the microphone in Windows:

Press Windows Key + I to open Settings. Click System.

Select Sound from the menu on the left.

Scroll down to Input and from the Input Device drop-down menu select Device Properties (the input device will be your webcam if you don’t have a dedicated microphone).

At the top of the window, check the “Disable” box.

To disable the microphone on a Mac:

Click the Apple icon in the menu bar and choose System Preferences. Click Sound.Select the Input tab. In the Input Volume section, drag the slider all the way to the left to mute the microphone.

5. Suppress Background Noises

If you’re muting your microphone because you’re in a busy or loud environment, Zoom has a background noise suppression feature that can help. Pairing this with a virtual background is a great way to look more professional despite less than ideal circumstances.

To enable this option:

Open Zoom.Click “Settings > Audio”.

Scroll down to Suppress Background Noise and check each level to see if it improves your microphone quality. There are three levels: low, medium and high.

Note. Some people have reported that their microphone is not working because of this. If so, just change the setting back to “Auto”.
