5 Best Professional Photo Recovery Software for Android 2023.
Some of us still print photographs. Instead, we usually store them on our phones, USB drives, SD cards, and other forms of local storage. Unfortunately, these storage devices can get damaged or damaged. In such cases, one of these photo recovery apps can help you recover image files if you delete them
Also, be sure to watch our short video from our YouTube channel where we talk about some of the programs mentioned in this article.
Our Methodology
This is difficult to verify. Instead, we’ll run two tests with each packet to reflect what happens to most of us in the real world.
- We will copy a group of ten photos to an SD card and then Shift + Delete them (i.e. permanently delete) to see if recovery is possible.
- Then we will format the SD card and try to restore the photos again.
Most people who need photo recovery either accidentally delete their photos or format the card before backing up their pictures. Therefore, it is very important to test recovery applications for these two tasks as well.
Apart from this, there are also several other features that we like to see in the photo recovery app:
- Simple and intuitive interface.
- A quick scan and disk repair.
- Good file management.
Thanks to the ad-supported free software, you won’t enjoy intrusive ads either. However, in the end, the most important thing is whether you can get our photos back!
Recuva (Free and Pro)
Recuva is a well-known data recovery application. Recuva boasts that it can recover data from damaged disks and has an advanced “deep scan” mode that can merge files, or at least partial files, which other tools cannot.
The free version of Recuva does not skimp on file recovery features. The paid Pro version offers additional benefits in the form of automatic updates, VHD support, and access to developer help.
You can use the Recuva wizard to indicate that you want to restore images. You don’t need to dig into other types of content.
In our test, Recuva instantly returned all ten intentionally deleted photos. However, after quickly formatting the disk, the photos could not be restored. Deep Scan was still able to show some photos, but it took over an hour on our SD card and most of the images could not be restored.
So, Recuva did a good job with accidentally deleted photos. But we were not impressed with the formatting of the SD card.

Recoverit Photo Recovery (Paid)
Recoverit from Wondershare was easy to use and made it easy to select the right locations to scan deleted files. The app doesn’t look modern compared to the competition. This is disappointing as the software is expensive and the lowest price is only $ 60 per year.
However, Recoverit was able to recover all the photos using both the Shift + Delete operation and the quick format experiment. So if you can justify the cost, it’s effective.
Rating: 4/5
PhotoRec (Free)
PhotoRec is a free and open-source application that comes with another application called TestDisk. We don’t really like forced App Bundles, but at least both apps are portable and don’t need to be installed.
You can use either of the two executables in the package. One is the command line version and the other is the graphical version of the software. The graphical user interface tool makes it difficult to select the drive you want to recover from as it doesn’t show you the partition names of your drive. You must open the Disk Management Utility to see the correct partitions. You will also need to select the file format to recover.
The good news is that PhotoRec recovered both deleted and formatted files in no time. Thus, its performance as a recovery program was flawless.

Puran File Recovery (Free)
Simple erasure recovery isn’t as fast as Recuva, but the deep scan feature has been robust enough. It is a handy tool for those who have time but no money.
Rating: 4/5
Exif Untrasher (Free)
Exif Untrasher is macOS and freeware only. This means that the app itself is completely free, but if you find it useful, you can show your appreciation to the developer by investing a few dollars into it.
As the name suggests, this is an application specially written to recover photos from a camera memory card. However, freeware is a bit tricky to use.
You need to create a copy of the entire disk image that you want to recover. Our 128GB MacBook Pro didn’t have enough free space to house the 64GB SD card image. This meant that an external hard drive had to be used as the target. Everything to try to recover 10MB of JPEG photos. By creating a duplicate postcard image, you can recover your photos from this image.
EXIF failed to recover any of the photos we deleted in our test. However, longtime users have reported that it does work. But these days, high-capacity SD cards have become common, so duplicating them before restoring them is impractical.
There are a few more disadvantages. It only supports JPEG files. No RAW, PNG, TIFF or anything else. It feels like the app is out of date. Even smartphone cameras now shoot RAW photos. Thus, the lack of support for RAW image recovery is a problem.
However, most of the graphics applications for macOS that recover photos cost money. Exif Untrasher is free. If you are using small SD cards and fast external storage this might be the right option.

Photo Recovery App We Recommend: Regarding the utility that we think is the best overall, this difference belongs to PhotoRec. The app is free, portable and efficient. What more could you ask for?
Back Up Your Photos to the Cloud
You can always accidentally damage your USB stick or SD card, or it could fail on its own. A quick backup helps you avoid losing your valuable photos. The most secure form of backup today is cloud backup.
Services such as Dropbox, Google Drive, and iCloud offer near-reliable cloud-based backup services for your photos and videos.
If you’re not working, consider using an SD card reader to back up photos to your phone. Then, either use your mobile data to back up to the cloud or do it as soon as you reach the next suitable Wi-Fi hotspot.
It is convenient to have photo recovery software when things go wrong, but with a sensible backup workflow and the cloud, you can avoid common mistakes.
