4 Different Ways Add Border to Photos.

My job as a blogger includes working with screenshots day in and day out. Some of these screenshots have a white background that matches the white background of the page. This makes it difficult for our readers to interpret the images as there are no boundaries to define them.

There is something in the images with a frame. That’s why we like our images to have a border, right? It’s not for nothing that people joke about the frames added to Instagram. Looks nice. In my case and countless other bloggers and designers, it helps the user / reader to distinguish between text and images. So how do you add borders to photos?

1. Add a limit to Photos Online

LunaPic is a free web-based tool that you can use on your computer or smartphone via a browser. Just fire up the site and start adding a frame to your photos. Don’t get me wrong, LunaPic is incredibly powerful and has tons of options and settings.

You can do anything with it, but in this article I will add borders. Open the site (direct link to the border tool below). There is a file upload option. Select the file, choose a border color and enter the desired border size in pixels. It is also called thickness.

In the above screenshot, there is a 1 pixel black border. Looks good? There is a Tiled Background option where you can add pictures as a background. There is a sample image on the page that will update in real time as you select different options. Go play with it.

You will notice a floating toolbar on the left side of the screen. Here you can add text, crop, resize, zoom in / out, choose a color, draw, paint, add illustrations, animations, and more with your images. It comes with cloud support and connects to a number of image hosting sites.

Since it is a browser-based tool, you can use it on any computer with any OS like Windows, Linux, MacOS, and any browser like Firefox or Chrome.

2. Add borders to photos on Android or iOS

PicsArt is a very popular image editing tool available for both Android and iOS. I am using the Android version for this article, but the process remains the same on any platform. You start by downloading the app.

There is a “+” sign at the bottom of the screen. Click on it and give the necessary permissions for the app to access your gallery.

You will see four options. I chose Edit because I had a screenshot. You can choose any other based on your needs. Select the image you want to add a frame to and open it.

A new window should appear where you can select the color and thickness of the border. There are two types of curbs: internal and external. I’ll leave an internal value of 0px and an external value of 1px for the purposes of this article. You can choose any. Black color.

3. Add borders to pictures on Windows

Sometimes you are working with a lot of images and you need to process them. Perhaps you need a tool that you can use without an internet connection. You enjoy working on the big screen. Do you want free software, maybe even open source?

ShareX marks all checkboxes. Free open source image editing software for Windows that you can use to add borders to photos in bulk. You can create different presets, think of them as profiles, with settings. Let’s say you want your screenshots to have a 1 pixel black outer border and resize it to 375×667.

Create a preset and save it, name it. Now you can just open an image, select a preset and watch the magic. Your image will be resized and a border will be added. It is now ready to be saved.

Let’s see how to do it.

Open ShareX. On the left pane, you will see the Tools option.

4. Add borders to photos on macOS

While you can use the native Preview app to add a border (go to Tools-Annotate-Rectangle), it’s not very intuitive. So, if you’re looking for a dedicated app, try Image Frame. The app is free to download from the App Store and is easy to use.

Once you have launched the application, click the Add Images button in the upper right corner of the screen. You can add one image or import multiple images at once. Then drag the image into the preview window. The app now comes with 6 different artistic frames by default, but if you just want to add a simple frame, click the radio button next to the simple frame. Choose the color and size of the frame and that’s it. Now you can import images and start using them.
